Chapter 142: Acquisition!

Chapter 142: Acquisition!

Pei Qian thought for a moment and asked, “This is my first time acquiring a company—anything I should watch out for?”

Assistant Xin flipped open her notebook. “There are quite a few risks. For example, companies like this often have issues with registered capital. We’ll need to check for any false capital contributions or capital withdrawal.”

“Then there are things like company assets, liabilities, and owner’s equity. We should review depreciation of fixed assets, amortization of intangible assets, and any non-recoverable assets.”

“But this company isn’t very big. It’s a small private firm. The owner is named Du Ruijie, and together with one other partner, they hold all the shares. In reality, it’s mainly Du Ruijie running things.”

“My estimate is, he’s probably in a hurry to offload the business. The company has become completely insolvent and is losing money every month. With a bit of pressure on the price, we could likely acquire it for a few hundred thousand yuan.”

“If you’ve got the patience, we might even talk it down lower.”

Pei Qian blinked. “That cheap?”

He was a little disappointed.

He’d thought it would cost at least one or two million, but turns out he could scoop it up for just a few hundred grand?

Assistant Xin nodded. “Of course, President Pei. The company was originally founded by Du Ruijie and his partner with a total investment of 1 million yuan. Later, due to some lucky breaks, their games made some money, and that’s how it grew to its current scale.”

“Du Ruijie has already made a pretty penny. If he can sell off this mess for a few hundred thousand more, he’d consider that a blessing. He’s not in a position to ask for more.”

“If nobody picks it up, all the company’s assets will likely be liquidated at rock-bottom prices. I even heard that Du is considering letting employees take their office computers home to offset unpaid wages.”

Pei Qian: “…”

Very imaginative!

On one hand, that avoids having to sell a ton of office equipment secondhand. On the other hand, it neatly solves the problem of back wages.

This Du Ruijie guy really was a small-time genius!

Pei Qian had no intention of raising the price.

First, bumping up the offer artificially would look too suspicious. If a company could be bought for a few hundred thousand, but he insisted on paying over a million, people would definitely get suspicious.

Second, he was already planning to open multiple new Moyu Internet Café branches, and his cash flow was tight.

So, he’d just pay the “reasonable” price.

Assistant Xin also gave a brief overview of other procedures—verifying shareholder transfers, checking account statements, collecting employee contracts, insurance and payroll records, bringing in a notary to authenticate key documents—

Pei Qian didn’t concern himself with any of that.

His job was simple: spend the money. All those nitty-gritty details were for the professionals to handle.

Closing her notebook, Assistant Xin said, “That’s about everything. President Pei, would you like to do a bit of ‘undercover investigation’?”

Pei Qian paused. “Undercover what?”

“If we arrange an official visit after talking to Mr. Du, he’ll obviously prepare in advance. You won’t get to see the company’s true condition,” she explained. “If you don’t reveal your identity, you can observe their office environment, employees’ work status, and use that information to drive the price down during negotiations.”

Pei Qian nodded in understanding. So basically… this was like surprise inspections from higher-ups.

If the other side got wind of it, they’d start doing image-building nonsense, and you’d never see the real situation.

But he shook his head. “No need. That kind of surface-level prep doesn’t matter. Some things can’t be faked no matter how hard you try.”

Seeing how confident President Pei was, Assistant Xin figured he had already mentally crushed the company into his grasp.

Assistant Xin didn’t press further.

“In that case, President Pei, I’ll get in touch with them and arrange a meeting between you and Mr. Du.”

Pei Qian nodded.

“The sooner, the better!”

The next morning.

Pei Qian arrived at the base of Shangyang Games’ office building.

Just as he opened the door of his Cayenne, a man in glasses—who looked under thirty—immediately walked up to greet him.

“President Pei, right? Hello! I’m Wang Xiaobin, the Lead Executive Designer of Shangyang Games. Boss Du is waiting upstairs.”

Wang Xiaobin was quite enthusiastic.

But Pei Qian was caught off guard.

“Isn’t your Lead Executive Designer Old Liu?”

Though he didn’t know much about Shangyang Games, he was very familiar with Old Liu—practically an old acquaintance.

Back when Old Liu interviewed at Tengda, Pei Qian had met him in person. He’d also heard Huang Sibo and Ma Yiqun mention him.

And ever since learning of Old Liu’s legendary antics, Pei Qian had always felt a pang of regret.

If only he’d hired Old Liu back then, the guy might have messed up the game development beyond repair—he wouldn’t have to go through such trouble just to lose money!

Still, better late than never.

Pei Qian’s main reason for coming today was to acquire the entire Shangyang Games team intact. And as Lead Executive Designer, Old Liu was absolutely indispensable.

So why was some stranger greeting him instead of Old Liu?

Wang Xiaobin looked a little awkward.

“I didn’t expect President Pei to know our company so well. I’ll explain that in a bit—please, come inside first.”

Still feeling suspicious, Pei Qian followed Wang Xiaobin into the building and up to Shangyang Games on the second floor.

As they passed the office area, Pei Qian felt a bit out of place looking at the rows upon rows of cramped desks.

He’d gotten used to Tengda’s spacious layout. Seeing this kind of packed-in, shoulder-to-shoulder setup made him uncomfortable.

The overall environment was decent—clean floors, tidy desks, and employees typing away or using editors, all looking focused and diligent.

Pei Qian knew this was clearly staged in anticipation of his visit.

If you looked closely, most people weren’t actually doing anything. Just pretending.

Many had documents open but hadn’t typed a single word in ages—clearly zoning out or daydreaming somewhere far, far away.

Pei Qian didn’t expose them, simply continued following Assistant Xin and Wang Xiaobin toward the CEO’s office.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Du Ruijie was already waiting at the office door.

He looked to be in his late thirties, slightly balding but not overweight. Dressed like a successful middle-aged businessman, he gave off a sharp, savvy vibe.

“President Pei!”

“Welcome! I’ve heard so much about you—young and capable. Seeing you in person today, you really live up to your reputation!”

Du greeted him warmly and ushered Pei Qian and Assistant Xin into the office. Wang Xiaobin quickly went to make tea.

Normally that would be an assistant or admin’s job, but clearly, Shangyang Games had no dedicated admin staff—so employees had to do it themselves.

This was actually quite common for small indie studios. Hiring extra admin meant more salary burden, and unless the company reached a certain size, it just wasn’t worth it.

Soon, Wang Xiaobin returned with tea.

Pei Qian gave it a glance—probably nothing fancy. He took a symbolic sip, then put the cup down.

“Xiaobin, you sit too,” Du Ruijie said, gesturing toward the chair beside him. “If President Pei has any questions about our games, you’ll be answering them.”

Clearly, Du Ruijie was the money guy, not particularly hands-on with game development.

He’d heard that President Pei wasn’t just a boss, but also a talented designer. So he was afraid Pei Qian might ask some technical questions he couldn’t answer—hence putting Wang Xiaobin in the support seat.

Realizing the fate of the entire company rested on his shoulders, Wang Xiaobin couldn’t help but feel a little anxious.
