Chapter 146: The New Boss of Shangyang Games

Chapter 146: The New Boss of Shangyang Games

Due to the current budget limitations, Feihuang Studio couldn’t afford to produce any high-end documentary.

In Pei Qian’s memory, the more successful documentaries—like the wildly popular 2012 Bite of China—required a massive investment. They had to travel all across the country to gather footage, and the filming equipment was insanely expensive.

As of now, Feihuang Studio could only use 50% of the pure profits from President Pei's Daily Life, which came out to just over one million yuan. That amount of money was barely enough to scrape by.

Producing a documentary like Bite of China? Totally out of the question.

Still, Pei Qian wasn’t taking it lightly.

He understood these problems. Surely Zhu Xiaoce would too, right?

Of course he would.

Zhu Xiaoce was a young genius director. If he insisted on making a documentary, it had to be because he saw the potential for success.

Pei Qian had already been burned once and wasn’t about to fall for it again. This documentary would most likely make money.

But compared to short-form videos, this kind of low-budget documentary would probably earn less—which was fine.

Thinking this, Pei Qian said, “Alright, I support you.”

His tone was a little lifeless—he didn’t mean it sincerely, after all.

Huang Sibo was thrilled. “Thank you for your support, President Pei!”

After hanging up, Pei Qian casually asked about the situation with Shangyang Games.

Assistant Xin gave a brief report: everything was proceeding smoothly, and Pei Qian could visit on Monday to meet his new employees and assign tasks.

Pei Qian paused in thought. “Monday... do I really have to go?”

Assistant Xin coughed lightly. “Of course, you still need to. A boss has a huge impact on a company. I think you should show up and give a talk, President Pei. If you leave Shangyang Games to develop on its own, things might get a little... unpredictable.”

Pei Qian thought it over and realized that made sense.

What Assistant Xin meant was that he should go there to stabilize morale and set a general direction for development.

But what Pei Qian was worried about was whether the employees would start acting up and accidentally turn a profit.

Even though he was taking over a failing company, it wasn’t quite the same Shangyang Games anymore.

For one, Old Liu had left, and the Lead Executive Designer had been replaced by Wang Xiaobin.

And the boss, Du Ruijie, had run off.

These two likely played key roles in the company’s previous losses.

With them gone, Pei Qian felt uneasy.

To make sure everything stayed on the right (losing) track, he decided he’d better go in person.

Just this once. He’d never go again. He’d do his best to avoid having any influence on Shangyang Games.

After all, with the painful lessons of Tengda Games still fresh in his mind, Pei Qian no longer had any confidence in his game design skills. He needed to play it safe.

If he had a sudden brainwave and blurted out something that led to a repeat of the Ocean Fortress disaster, that would be too awkward.

“Alright, pick me up Monday morning. We’ll head to Shangyang Games first.”

Pei Qian let out a quiet sigh.

Being a boss sure is tough...

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Monday Morning

Shangyang Games

There were still ten minutes until office hours, but every employee of Shangyang Games was already in the building.

Everyone sat up straight, highly focused, eyes glued to documents and game editors—while also sneaking glances at the entrance.

Shangyang Games had a new boss!

No one knew what kind of person this mysterious President Pei was—what his temper was like, what kind of personality he had. So on the first day under new leadership, everyone was on high alert. Not a single person dared to slack off.

Everyone knew the company hadn’t been doing so well financially.

If President Pei wanted to assert his authority today by firing a latecomer to make an example, wouldn’t it be terribly unlucky for whoever got caught?

That’s why everyone was on high alert, not daring to slip up in the slightest.

The pressure on Wang Xiaobin was especially intense.

As the new Lead Executive Designer, he was really just a firefighter brought in to handle the crisis, and he had zero confidence in his own ability.

After Old Liu jumped ship, Wang Xiaobin was indeed the next in line based on seniority—he’d been a systems designer.

No one else could really command respect, and Du Ruijie didn’t trust them either.

Wang Xiaobin didn’t think too much about it. Since Mr. Du appointed him, he had to accept. Besides, back then, Shangyang Games was teetering on the edge of collapse. He figured he wouldn’t be Lead Executive Designer for long anyway.

But deep down, Wang Xiaobin knew the truth: he was good at spreadsheets and balancing stats, but when it came to leading an entire game project and setting the overall direction, he was completely out of his depth.

So today, he planned to come clean to President Pei and ask him to transfer a seasoned designer from Tengda Games to take over as lead, while he stepped back to play a supporting role.

At the workstation behind and to the left of Wang Xiaobin, a young man was secretly replying to chat messages on his phone.

The message window showed a recent text from Ma Yiqun:

“How’s it going, Xiao Ye? Has HR from Tengda contacted you yet?”

Ye Zhizhou replied:

“Nope.”

Ma Yiqun:

“That’s odd. I told President Pei about your situation. He said he wouldn’t let you be out of work. Don’t tell me he got too busy and forgot?”

Ye Zhizhou:

“President Pei just bought out Shangyang Games. You didn’t hear?”

Ma Yiqun:

“???”

There was a long pause. Clearly, Ma Yiqun was totally stunned.

What kind of solution was that from President Pei?

He just wanted the boss to help a buddy find a job. But when President Pei said “Your friend won’t be unemployed,” this was what he meant??

He bought the whole company?!

Ma Yiqun and the others really had no idea about this. Pei Qian hadn’t mentioned it yet, since he didn’t think it was relevant to them at the time.

So now Ma Yiqun was completely dumbfounded.

“Could it be that President Pei saw how talented Huang Sibo and I were, and thought the rest of Shangyang’s team must be just as great, so he decided to buy the company?”

“…What the hell am I thinking, that’s impossible.”

Ma Yiqun had just left Shangyang Games recently—he knew better than anyone what a mess that place was.

If he had to sum it up in five words, it would be on the brink of death.

Buying a company that was already buried six feet under—what was President Pei even planning?

Ye Zhizhou glanced at the clock. It was already time for work. He quickly typed a reply:

“Brother Ma, gotta go. President Pei might show up any minute now.”

He put away his phone and resumed pretending to look busy in front of his computer screen.

Moments later, Ye Zhizhou felt the atmosphere in the office suddenly tighten.

From the corner of his eye, he snuck a glance—sure enough, President Pei had arrived!

Even though they’d already met once before, seeing him again brought a wave of pressure from his confident presence.

Although President Pei was very young, there was something about him—a unique aura in his every movement.

How to describe that aura...

Wealth?

Confidence?

Compassion?

Rebellious independence?

None of those quite fit.

All in all, from his aura alone, you could tell President Pei was no ordinary man. Compared to the previous boss, Du Ruijie, the two were polar opposites.

And thinking about the legendary games President Pei had produced added a shining halo to his image—too dazzling to look at directly.

‘This… this is what a real leader should be like. President Du was just a lucky upstart at best.’

‘A true genius game designer—that’s what this is!’

Ye Zhizhou couldn’t help but feel genuine admiration.
