Chapter 5: Who's a Pet, Mom!?

As I followed the laughing Lily, I looked at the view in front of me, which consisted of a clear blue sky dotted with sparse white clouds, where a few moments ago there were hundreds of Wyrvens flying carefree.

It was a mostly clear day in Thaur Village, north of Maruen Danuz County (Apparently the ruler of these lands, according to this body's semantic memory).

Beneath the sky, endless mountains stretched to the horizon, with forests occupying a vast area at their bases. Nearby were a dozen black wooden houses, simple but sculptural.

The view emanated a sense of tranquility, a peace that didn't exist in the 22nd century, the era in which I had lived until then. To call such a scene bleak would have been an insult, and I couldn't help but chuckle at myself, becoming a part of it as I followed my sister.

“¿Maru?“

“It’s nothing,” I shake my head at Thadeus’s question as I look straight ahead.

As I'd observed from where we'd been sitting earlier, the village was already bustling with people going about their business. When we passed by some of them, they greeted us warmly.

“Wow, good morning, Thadeus-kun, Maru-chan!”

“So early and you’re already together, I see someone has already secured her husband~”

“Thadeus-chan, you should take care of your father’s house while he hunts instead of chasing skirts!”

Ladies, please, I'm not getting a husband and Thadeus-kun isn't after me!

I'd been observing this boy and, until now, he'd only treated me as a casual friend. There were no obvious signs of a boy having a first crush. At least... according to what I learned from manga and anime, no...

Anyway, he and I aren't getting married!

As I held back from saying all of that while awkwardly greeting the most well-known people in this body, I noticed a house larger than the rest…or rather, judging by the beer and food-themed sign, it was an inn, perhaps?

Lily ran there like it was nothing, so it must be our house. I say must, because when Thadeus called me, I followed him out the window without thinking twice, so I had no idea…

“Mom, we’re here!”

When Thadeus and I entered my inn-house following Lily, we saw a beautiful woman with golden blonde hair, slightly down to her neck, wearing an apron. She seemed to be the innkeeper of this place and most likely my new mother.

“Oh, they’re finally here, huh?”

“Good morning, Canelia-san”

“Good morning, Thadeus-kun. Try not to come so early just to drag my daughter along on a whim, okay?”

“Yes…” Thadeus scratched his head uncomfortably as Mom warned him in a soft but serious voice, with me behind him. Oh, I'm already calling her Mom in my head…

I tensed up when he called me, “And you, Maru?”

“¿S-si?”

“Just don’t mindlessly follow Thadeus-kun when he calls you, okay? I know a lot of men want an obedient wife and all that nonsense, but it’s worse if you’re already acting like a well-trained pet…”

“¡Mama!?“

What a horrible thing to say, Kaa-san….! And yet, why is my heart pounding at those ridiculous words!?

Oh, don't tell me, this girl was in love with Thadeus!? No wonder... I instinctively followed him at that moment.

This girl was probably the typical childhood friend in love with the protagonist who is never destined to be reciprocated... worse than that, she was destined to be just another narrative resource along with this entire town for the protagonist's awakening.

Thinking about it left a bitter taste in my mouth.

“Canelia-san, that joke is really bad,” Thadeus-kun replied to Mom in a serious voice, as if she really thought it was a joke. I looked at him with eyes like a dead fish.

Boy, look at his totally serious face, how was that a joke?

“Come on, honeys, sit down. The soup is going to get cold.”

“Oh, yes.”

At Mom's urging, Thadeus and I walked to one of the tables.

The dining room had eight round tables with four chairs each.

When it was busy, it probably took quite a bit of skill to navigate between the tables so tightly packed together. Lily was there, along with a middle-aged woman who appeared to be a worker, helping her carry plates… Shouldn't she be having breakfast too?

It seemed that two men who looked like farmers were already having bread and soup for breakfast…
