Chapter 9: Don't enter a girl's room so brazenly!

There in the mirror was an adorable girl about 10 or 11 years old with an oval face wrapped in platinum blonde hair, as pretty as a porcelain doll and with enchanting eyes that seemed to be made of beautiful, almost sparkling gems.

Her facial features, though slightly expressionless and thin, gave an impression of softness and kindness, with tender lips… Overall, she looked like the daughter of a wealthy family who just happened to dress like a country girl, if I go by what I've seen in manga and anime.

It was obvious that the girl, that is, Maru…no, me, was someone who would grow up to be a stunning beauty someday.

She would be the kind of woman who would easily gain the attention of countless well-behaved gentlemen and family just for her exquisite appearance… And if you add that I can use Magic?

Even Nobles might covet it… after all, Magic users among those who awaken Spirits are very rare because the innate mana needed is quite high, making the materials needed to train them scarce.

In fact, it was a mystery how Mom had the money and resources for even a common magic book….

With my thoughts all over the place, when I thought of moving my hands in front of the mirror, Maru did the same, and when I thought of smiling, she did too, albeit weakly; still, she was very charming, and I was stunned by her tenderness, placing a hand on my cheek without thinking.

Who would believe such a little beauty could be found in a small town on the outskirts of a county? If she were the daughter of a nobleman or something, I'd believe it without hesitation!

…There’s no way it could be that cliché, right?

That would be too much of a romance novel; Mom being a minor noblewoman forced into hiding for messing with a superior nobleman or something, or maybe a beautiful commoner lover who ran away for her life…

...Yes, I prefer to believe that something like that isn't happening. Wouldn't it be too tragic to come from that background and then be raped and murdered by bandits?

It would also be inconvenient if a handsome nobleman worthy of a Korean manwha protagonist came up and said "I'm your father" while seeking Mom's love or something like that...

No, I must stop thinking about so much nonsense.

I'm supposed to do this watching thing so I can use Magic!

….As strange as it may sound, that's how it is….

Anyway….What was it like?

Oh, right, I remember that, according to the experienced heroines of Magic, at the beginning of magical training, you were simply supposed to visualize a version of yourself that "exists" in accordance with your element; that is, visualize that you embody the element in question, and then search within yourself with your will for an existence that resonates with that image... it's pretty vague, honestly.

So, with that in mind, I simply closed my eyes, focused on the unforgettable image of myself, and… Wait… What’s my element?! No, if Mom’s words are any guide, what are my elements, exactly!?

I tried to concentrate, searching inside myself for that all-important information…nothing.

Damn….Why is my body acting like I have amnesia?

I can access some common knowledge, but practically nothing about myself!

“….What should I do? Should I ask Mom? But it would be strange if I forgot my own items…”

Above all, if I had to go by how the awakening looked in-game — and I clarify that it was quite simple but informative — you couldn't not know what your element was unless you were an ignoramus who didn't know what certain colors represented.

“Maru”

“Oh my God!”

I got a fright at the sudden call!

Furious and with my hand on my chest, I looked at the person responsible for that annoying little scare — Thadeus The Future Hero-kun — who looked at me without a hint of regret!

The brat!

“What are you doing? Aren’t you studying?”

“I was thinking about something very important until you scared me, idiot!” I exclaimed, annoyed by his interruption. “Didn’t I miss you, Mom?”

“And what could that be?”

He asked me curiously, leaning his hands against the window and ignoring my question. Instead of saying he came here to do something, he's just asking about my business!

That's hateful!

“It’s none of your business—” Wait a minute… I just realized something. “Actually… I have something I want to ask you.”

I looked at him with a serious expression, and he looked back at me expressionlessly.

Carefully, and in a way that would not give any suspicion of my total ignorance, I asked the important question, “You do remember what my elemental spirits are, right?”

He tilted his head for a moment, and for a second my heart sank at the thought that he suspected something was seriously wrong…or so I want to believe.

So, I immediately felt relieved with her response, “Wasn’t it Light and Earth? Why are you asking me about Poshi and Tama anyway?”

I see, Light and Earth. It's good that you're not so concerned about the reason for the question... Wait, Poshi and Tama? Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't those extremely common names for dogs and cats in Japanese!?

What a tacky nomenclature... I don't have the courage to ask who came up with it... besides, spirits came in the form of dogs and cats, wow... I was completely wrong.

Goodbye to the majestic Maru of flames or water...but, Light and Earth, eh.

Earth...a classical element, and Light...is considered a Divine Element, as far as I understand, literally being the "Aether" of Greek mythology or something like that. What kind of combination is that?

That said, since Aether or “Light” blends so well with all the classic elements, it’s quite useful, especially when using higher-order spells like Purification.

Of course, it's not like I'm going to be using high-level spells; that sort of thing usually touches on the more metaphysical aspects of Spirits and the elements they embody.

Elements like Fire and Earth aren't just about elemental attacks and the like; they also carry symbolism. For example, Fire represents life and death, destruction and divinity...or something like that.

I myself don't understand that on a deep level... anyway, by understanding that kind of thing, you can use very diverse spells from a single element... not to mention several of them.

“Thadeus calling MaruMaru back to the mundane world~”

Suddenly, a mocking voice sounded next to me, and I felt someone gently pinch my cheek, taking me by surprise.

What the fuck...!? When did you get in!?

Don't brazenly enter a girl's room!
