Chapter 103: Sudden Death

"Too naïve, Elf!"

Kirishi-tan dodged both the barrel I threw and its ricochet with ease, then hurled a barrel back at me.

Top Chat: She’s falling, falling, falling!
Top Chat: Hook herrrr!
Top Chat: Whew—so close!
Top Chat: I thought Elf-san had lost there!

"Arghh, come on! How did that not knock you out!?"

The barrel Kirishi-tan threw had collided with another barrel sprouting on the court, changing its course to chase after me as I fled.
That wasn’t coincidence—she must have read my movement and aimed for it.
She didn’t just have skills. She could fight with strategy. In other words—

"Kirishi-tan, you’re strong."

"That’s not something you say while surviving it!"

"I got scolded."

Top Chat: lol
Top Chat: Praises her, gets scolded.
Top Chat: Talk about bad timing.
Top Chat: But Elf-san really is on the back foot here.

"I am reducing the number of barrels, though."

Our situations were complete opposites.
I threw barrels the moment they sprouted, proactively thinning the ricochets.
Meanwhile, Kirishi-tan always kept multiple barrels in hand, then timed her attacks to chain two or three throws whenever new ones spawned near me.
Defense and offense. But apparently, my approach wasn’t the better one.

Top Chat: Sudden Death just started!

"Sudden Death?"

Top Chat: The platforms on the sides disappear.
Top Chat: The court keeps shrinking until there’s a winner.
Top Chat: In other words… you’re in trouble.

"Exactly! You’re already at the edge, Elf—one hit now and you’re done!"

"Whoops."

I barely managed to dodge Kirishi-tan’s barrel.
But all the while, the court was crumbling away from both sides.

Top Chat: This is bad!
Top Chat: Biggest pinch yet for Elf!
Top Chat: The lambs shall toast Kirishi-tan’s impending victory!
Top Chat: Crack open a can and toast!
Top Chat: Don’t drink in the middle of a weekday afternoon.

"Whoa!"

Top Chat: Close call!
Top Chat: Safe! Safe!
Top Chat: If only the shrinkage were front-to-back instead.
Top Chat: Nah, that’d make it too easy.

"What do you mean, too easy front-to-back?"

Top Chat: You’d simply have less time to see incoming barrels.
Top Chat: Which means harder to dodge, harder to catch.
Top Chat: In the end, you’d be forced to fight along the central line.
Top Chat: smooch
Top Chat: The sides are shrinking anyway, lol.
Top Chat: …Wait? Elf-san, why are you gathering three barrels?

"To shorten it."

Top Chat: Shorten what?
Top Chat: Huh?
Top Chat: The throwing motion.
Top Chat: Wait, which way is he facing?

"What are you planning…?"

"To shorten the time the barrel can be seen."

I hurled a barrel into one I’d placed behind me, then quickly grabbed another.
The ricocheted barrel came flying straight back at me—

"Here we go."

—And launched me forward at blinding speed toward Kirishi-tan’s side.

Top Chat: Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh!?
Top Chat: No way!?
Top Chat: What the heck!?
Top Chat: He used a barrel ricochet to launch himself!?

"Wh—w-wait, no, ahhhhhhhhhh!?"

Top Chat: Whoaaa.
Top Chat: Getting flung while throwing? Never knew that was possible.
Top Chat: Only Elf-san would ever even try it.
Top Chat: Kirishi-tan just got blasted out at insane speed.
Top Chat: The launch speed stacked on top of the barrel knockback.
Top Chat: Makes sense—the reaction time was shortened!
Top Chat: Is this… a revolution?
Top Chat: No way anyone else could pull that acrobatics off mid-match, lol.

"If Ky—Siren were still here, I’d have had her throw one at me from behind too."

Top Chat: …He just described a non-acrobatics method?
Top Chat: Oh no, our casual chat just birthed a weird new strategy!
Top Chat: "Our"?
Top Chat: It’s our fault for not warning him!
Top Chat: "Our"?
Top Chat: By us! For us! Of us!
Top Chat: Politics?

"I won."

Top Chat: The lambs mourn Kirishi-tan’s defeat.
Top Chat: Crack open a can and mourn!
Top Chat: Don’t start your second can already!
