Book 2, Chapter 10a: Day Five: The Price Of Freedom

A part of me wanted to tease Brin about me having to do my own toiletries the night before, but I quickly pushed that humor aside. Didn’t need her remotely thinking I was even half serious. Besides, if she could get over her prejudice against commoners, I was all for it.

Later that day, riding with Morry, up the line, I asked him, “You think Tread likes Brin?”

He smiled, “Hadn’t noticed.”

“You haven’t seen how they interact lately? He’s always doing stuff for her, pulling out her chair, offering tea to the guards when I asked her to do it. She even stayed out late after I’d gone to bed.”

“Are you jealous, Princess?”

“No! Not at all. Happy for them.”

“It’ll end in heartbreak.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Well, she’s royalty and he’s a soldier.”

“Perhaps I should knight him.”

“Night him?”

“Uh . . . raise him to the rank of lord. Earl? What do you call that?”

“You’re going to exalt Tread to the status of an earl?”

“Are you jealous?”

“Hmm. I just might be.”

“Well, you were promoted to chef just a few days ago. I’m thinking you’ll make chamberlain any day now.”

“I look forward to hanging up my sword and running your humble abode then.”

“I’m not sure I want you to hang up your sword just yet. Lots of bad guys out there.”

“It’ll ever be at the ready for you,” he said with a wink.

I cocked my head, then trotted a bit faster than him, trying not to blush. This girl’s body, I didn’t know if it was taking over, but I just couldn’t control it sometimes.
