Chapter 175: The Anger of the Elderly Lady Catherine

“Catherine is two years younger than me. She’s still studying at Federal University and won’t graduate until next year.”
“Although I’m confident in my own looks, I have to admit that Catherine is no less beautiful than I am.”

Stella shook her head lightly as she talked about Catherine.

In truth, she wasn’t particularly close to Catherine. They had only met because they were both among the most eye-catching women at the university’s graduation gala.

Beautiful girls often develop a quiet sense of mutual appreciation, and that was how the two of them became acquainted.

At the university, many students came from Puritan families. Under that kind of upbringing, jealousy was treated almost like an original sin.

Besides, Stella had already graduated by then, so there was no possibility of any conflict with Catherine over school matters.

Stella didn’t mention anything about family backgrounds, but Trelawny knew very well that anyone studying at Federal University was bound to come from an extraordinary family.

Oh, damn Davey.
Oh, lucky Davey.

That bastard—how did Davey manage to earn the affection of two equally beautiful college girls?

It wasn’t fair.

If jealousy really was an original sin, then only God could forgive the sins Trelawny was committing right now.

At this point, he no longer felt like reconciling Stella and Davey. Instead, he wanted to tell her to get away from that bastard as soon as possible.

Well then—considering the greenbacks—Mr. Trelawny could only force himself to lie through his teeth.

“Miss Stella, in my opinion, pursuing the love that belongs to you is something no one has the right to criticize.”

“Perhaps Miss Catherine does have some sort of relationship with Davey, but they aren’t married, nor have they formally confirmed their love. That means this is still your chance, isn’t it?”

“She’s still a student, while you already have your own law firm and are even Davey’s partner. What a perfect opportunity.”

“Missing out on true love is something a person can regret for a lifetime. I believe you should be brave and pursue it, Miss Stella.”

“After all, love is inherently a selfish thing, isn’t it, Miss Stella?”

Trelawny had never met Catherine. Based purely on his first impression, he felt that Stella was far more suitable for Davey. After all, she was a lawyer, which would save them a great deal of trouble.

Although Trelawny was a member of the Van der Linde Gang and had previously worked for Dutch, at present, Davey was his boss.

Thinking about his boss’s interests was part of his job.

“Perhaps you’re right, Mr. Trelawny, but… I still need some time to think,” Stella said.

Her expression had improved noticeably. At the very least, speaking these bottled-up thoughts aloud made her feel much better.

This trip meant Trelawny had essentially fulfilled Davey’s request.

...

At the same time, on Rue Flavienne in Saint Denis.

A large number of gunmen were gathering, led by Guido Martelli, one of Bronte’s men.

Their target was Davey’s moonshine operation in Rhodes Town.

The sight of dozens of armed riders assembling made many nearby residents nervous, and quite a few went so far as to report it to the police.

Officers arrived quickly.

However, Mattoli was clearly no stranger to the Saint Denis police. Many of the officers recognized him.

Once they learned that Mattoli was simply leading his men out of the city, the officers relaxed.

What they feared most was an unannounced gang shootout, especially one that could seriously disrupt public order in Saint Denis.

Under normal circumstances, gangs would notify the police in advance, giving officers time to clear civilians from the area and avoid innocent casualties.

Any damage caused by such clashes would also be compensated by the gangs themselves—an unwritten rule in Saint Denis.

Of course, this only applied to major gangs. Smaller groups often ignored these conventions, and the police would pursue and fine them accordingly.

...

Braithwaite Manor Mansion.

“Bartholomew, my child, why did you tell Bronte about Davey’s affairs—and even act as their guide?”

“That was an incredibly foolish thing to do. We should never have involved ourselves in their war. Don’t you understand that?”

“We cannot withstand Davey’s retaliation. Even if that ranch was destroyed by Mr. Bronte, do you really think the matter would end there?”

“An enraged Davey, unable to go to Saint Denis to deal with Mr. Bronte, will turn his blade on us instead.”

“Don’t delude yourself into thinking Mr. Bronte will protect us, you idiot! This is the West, and Davey—have you forgotten who he is? He’s a murderer, a wanted man!”

Old Mrs. Catherine flew into a rage, nearly driven mad by her foolish son.

What had once been such a perfect situation—letting Davey clash with Bronte. No matter who won, it wouldn’t have affected the Braithwaite family in the slightest. Yet now, the eldest son, Bartholomew, had gone and handed Davey’s information straight to Bronte.

“Mother, don’t be so tense,” Bartholomew said quickly. “They won’t trace the leak back to us. After all, in Rhodes Town, this isn’t exactly a big secret, is it?”

“They’ll assume Bronte discovered it himself. Isn’t that how it’ll look?”
