Chapter 177: Ambush
Rhodes Town, Land Ranch.
Mac and Emin were stationed here. This place also served as Davey’s moonshine production site in Rhodes Town.
To keep the moonshine recipe confidential, Benedict—the fake drug dealer working for Davey—only needed to prepare enough raw ingredients in Valentine. Once those ingredients were transported to Land Ranch, the moonshine could be completed here.
Medical alcohol was no longer a bottleneck for Davey’s moonshine business. The clinic in Strawberry Town was already under his control, and even the doctor in Rhodes Town was one of his collaborators.
These minor matters no longer required Davey to personally intervene. Donal or others involved in the operation could handle everything with ease.
“Damn it, why did Davey assign me to this kind of guard duty?” Mac complained.
“Stuck here all day—this place is boring as hell. There’s nowhere to have any fun.”
“After seeing how great Saint Denis is, the women in Rhodes Town don’t interest me at all.”
“Emin, don’t you want to go to Saint Denis and experience it for yourself? Those beautiful ladies—even the enthusiasm of the working girls?”
Mac spoke with clear irritation.
The buildings at Land Ranch were obviously quite crude. Better ones were under construction, but they clearly wouldn’t be finished in just a few days.
Aside from drinking moonshine freely, there was absolutely nothing entertaining to do.
According to company rules, all Land Security Company employees were strictly forbidden from drinking alcohol or gambling while on duty. Anyone caught would be fired on the spot.
That meant Mac couldn’t even find a drinking buddy, let alone play a few rounds of poker.
“I’m sorry, Mac,” Emin replied seriously.
“I have a wife. I can’t betray her.”
“Besides, the boss instructed me to keep an eye on you while we’re stationed here. Every day, we need to do a certain amount of training—hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship, and horseback riding.”
“Mac, you’ve already missed the required training quota for several days. Since we’re friends, I won’t report it to the boss for now. But if you keep this up, I won’t have a choice.”
Emin’s tone was earnest and meticulous.
Mac sighed helplessly.
“Alright, you stiff, wooden block. You really don’t understand romance at all.”
“I’ll finish the training. Today’s just a special case—Davey can’t find out.”
“You know, Davey used to be just like me. Now it’s like he suddenly got God’s blessing and became smart overnight.”
“Sure, he can’t beat me in a fight, but he’s the older brother. That means I can’t hit back. It’s awful.”
Emin looked at Mac with a hint of resignation.
In hand-to-hand combat, Mac was absolutely top-tier. During every combat training session, he usually fought several people at once—otherwise, there simply wouldn’t be enough opponents for him.
The same went for marksmanship and horsemanship. At Land Ranch, no one could compare to him.
The other employees trained painstakingly hard, yet they were still in a completely different league from Mac.
Sometimes, no amount of effort could compete with sheer talent.
Just then, an employee came to report that members of the Braithwaite family were outside the ranch and seemed to have urgent business.
This gave Mac the perfect excuse to avoid training. He immediately followed Emin to see what was going on.
Gareth and Gerald were allowed into the ranch.
Only after entering did they truly realize how wise their mother’s decision had been. Every single employee here was an outstanding fighter; compared to them, the Braithwaite family guards were on a completely different level.
“Oh, Braithwaite gentlemen,” Mac said casually.
“What brings you to our place?”
He clearly had no intention of offering coffee or tea.
When it came to communication, Gerald was obviously the better one.
“Mr. Mac, here’s the situation,” Gerald said.
“Our family has obtained some intelligence regarding Mr. Bronte of Saint Denis.”
“Because of certain previous matters involving Mr. Callander, Mr. Bronte intends to attack this place.”
“They’ve already gathered their men and departed from Saint Denis. They may arrive in two or three hours.”
“Our mother sent us here to pass this information on to you.”
Hearing this, Mac became visibly excited.
“Finally, something to do,” he said with a grin.
“So these guys dare to come after us?”
“Do you know how many of them there are?”
“If there are too few, it won’t be any fun.”
Gerald shook his head.
“I’m sorry, sir. I don’t know the exact number. But I believe there should be at least several dozen men. Mr. Bronte has that kind of influence.”
At that moment, Emin spoke up.
“Mac, we might still have time to set up an ambush,” he said.
“Coming from Saint Denis, they’ll have to cross the Kamassa River. There are two routes.”
“One passes behind Caliga Hall, but I don’t think they’ll choose that path—it’s Gray family territory.”
“The other is the bridge near Rage Rock. They’ll most likely come from there.”
“If we prepare an ambush in advance, we can catch them off guard and minimize casualties.”
After hearing Emin’s suggestion, Mac didn’t see any issues.
“Alright,” he replied.
“We’ll go with your plan, Emin. That’s a good strategy.”
