Chapter 230: I Will Follow Your Instructions, Mr. Land

Davey’s words made cold sweat break out on Trappett’s back.

Just as he himself had said, he was nothing more than a low-ranking officer in the Saint Denis Police Department. Politics was far beyond his understanding.

In truth, what Davey said was half true and half false.

From Trappett’s perspective, Davey’s close relationship with Mrs. Berry meant he must have access to far more information from the councilors.

In reality, Davey hadn’t even met any of them. Still, it wasn’t a complete lie—Davey had long planned to bring Henri Lemieux down.

He already knew that the mayor’s mansion was Henri Manor, the very address where he had once corresponded with Catherine.

Even if Davey suspected that Catherine and Henri were connected, that wouldn’t stop his plan to remove Henri from office.

“Mr. Land… I’m sorry. I don’t know what I should do anymore.”

“Mr. Henri has always treated me well. He’s helped me in many ways.”

Trappett began to waver. Anyone would, after hearing something like that.

“I think you should think more about your wife and your children, Mr. Trappett.”

“Perhaps Mr. Henri did help you. But surely you’ve also done a great deal for him in return, haven’t you?”

“If you look at it that way, those debts have already been repaid. And Mr. Henri stepping down is only a matter of time.”

“You should think more about your own future—and that of your wife and children.”

After finishing, Davey lifted his brandy and took a sip, looking at Trappett with a faint, knowing smile.

He knew Trappett was making his final internal struggle. Surrender was only a matter of time. The olive branch he had extended was more than generous.

“Mr. Land… what should I do?”

After hesitating for a full three minutes, Trappett finally took a deep breath and asked, his voice unsteady.

The moment Davey heard this, he knew Trappett had already submitted.

“Mr. Trappett, I don’t need you to do much. Just as I said before, we’re friends. And friends help each other, don’t they?”

“The Saint Denis Police Department has a chief, but no deputy chief. That’s clearly not ideal.”

“I think that if a new mayor takes office, he’ll certainly appoint a deputy chief.”

Hearing this, Trappett knew there was no turning back.

The temptation of the deputy chief position was enormous. He had never imagined that Davey could wield such influence.

“Mr. Land, Trappett will follow your instructions. Please tell me what I should do.”

Trappett lowered his head slightly toward Davey in a gesture of respect.

It was submission.

I don’t know what to do.
What should I do?
Tell me what to do.

Trappett had said nearly the same words three times—but each time, the meaning had changed completely.

From confusion, to hesitation, to asking for orders.

In less than half an hour since stepping into this private room, he had become part of Davey’s faction.

“Mr. Jean-Marc Mercier. I believe you know him, Mr. Trappett.”

“For now, I want you to ensure he receives sufficient protection. I believe he’s very likely to become the next mayor.”

“Of course, that’s not my decision alone. Many influential figures are optimistic about him. They believe he may be the only one capable of cleaning up the city government’s mess.”

“If possible, I’d like you to interact with Mr. Jean more. If he needs help, do your best to cooperate.”

Davey finally revealed his true objective.

According to the original game’s storyline, Jean was already collecting evidence of the mayor’s corruption at this point. All Davey needed to do was give things a little push.

Even if he currently had no direct connection with Jean, that wasn’t a problem.

When interests align, some people are destined to become allies rather than enemies.

Compared to Bronte, Davey had arrived in Saint Denis too late. If he wanted to truly control the city, he had to start from the top.

The police department was another force he needed to infiltrate.

Even as a sharpshooter, Davey knew that the Saint Denis Police Department’s firepower ranked among the best in the world—especially the Gatling gun mounted on the carriage. That kind of firepower was something even the best gunmen wanted no part of.

Such a powerful armed force was something Davey would never ignore.

Bronte’s arrogance in Saint Denis stemmed precisely from his close ties with the police department.

Between Benjamin and Bronte, there were certainly countless shady deals. Their interests were tightly bound together, leaving Davey almost no room to interfere.

Bronte might even possess a large amount of evidence related to Benjamin’s illegal activities.

Given all that, Davey’s only option was to cultivate his own power base.

And Trappett was an excellent choice.

Trappett naturally knew Jean well. As the mayor’s secretary, Jean handled much of the city government’s daily affairs.

“Of course, Mr. Land. I will follow your instructions. If Mr. Jean needs my help, I’ll do everything I can to assist him.”
