Chapter 179: Accepting the Challenge

“Mr. Vimers, you don’t seem worried at all?”

Mr. Ling Yunfeng looked at Roland, whose expression remained calm, and asked with a hint of curiosity.

On the screen before them was the battlefield: PROJECT’s forces facing a mechanized New United States army numbering over twenty thousand.

“If I dared to do this, it’s because I’m confident,” Roland said with a smile. “Charging in without any real backing would just make me a joke.”

He leaned back in his chair, utterly composed. Once he received confirmation that the transport had arrived, he was already at ease. Even if they somehow lost on the front lines, that army wouldn’t be able to enter Elor City.

Besides, Roland didn’t believe he would lose the main battlefield. PROJECT’s highly advanced war machines—both ground forces and aerial units—were fully deployed.

Countermeasures against EMPs and graphite bombs were already in place, coupled with top-tier individual combat capabilities.

More importantly, the New United States still didn’t know the true strength of PROJECT’s army. Last time, only one trump card had been exposed—the Nightmare War Chariot. Everything else had yet to enter the field.

This time… it was the perfect opportunity to show their strength. From Kelly, Roland had also learned that the New United States was currently launching its general offensive elsewhere, meaning they had no spare forces to divert to this battlefield.

That meant he could act far more aggressively. As for what came afterward?

Once this was over, his footing would be secure. If the New United States, having just finished its Unification War, wanted to make a move against him then, it would have to think very carefully.

And that extra time for development would be more than enough for him to pull off something truly world-shaking.

...

“How are the preparations for the Armor-Piercing Rounds and the newly developed Energy Dissipation Device?”

Green, the New United States officer leading this operation at Elor City, asked the assembled officers.

“They’re ready. As long as we get within range, a single-soldier combat unit carrying the Energy Dissipation Device should be able to deal with their Nightmare War Chariot.”

“Good. Have the suicide squad stand by.”

Green nodded and issued the order. The Armor-Piercing Rounds and the Energy Dissipation Device had been prepared specifically to counter the Nightmare War Chariot.

Both weapons were still experimental. Armor-Piercing Rounds were close to stability, while the Energy Dissipation Device was still in trial operation. It had originally been developed for special operations, not for direct battlefield use.

But the bizarre defensive energy shield displayed by the Nightmare War Chariot that day… had reminded them of energy weapons that existed only as concepts, still under development.

Since it was all energy-based, the Energy Dissipation Device should theoretically work as well.

The problem was cost. The materials consumed were substantial, and the device was a rushed, compact version. According to Militech’s internal experts, it could at best tear open a gap for the armor-piercing round to punch through—nothing more.

That meant the mission required a suicide squad with both strength and perfect coordination.

“We’ll be entering range soon. Prepare the mine-clearing units.”

Green calmly gave the order, while also dispatching drones and armed AVs to provide cover for the mine-clearing teams.

However…

“You’re saying there’s no minefield?”

Green looked at the reporting officer in surprise, took the report from his hands, and immediately frowned.

He didn’t believe the enemy had failed to deploy a minefield with so much time. And more than that… they were already this close to Elor City, yet no one had come out to stop them.

The unease in Green’s chest deepened.

That unease was quickly confirmed. As the ground began to tremble, dozens of black shapes burst up from beneath the earth, throwing the formation into chaos.

“ROAR!”

With a beast-like bellow, everyone finally saw what they were—mechanical scorpions, forged entirely from steel.

“Everyone, stay calm! Defensive positions! Engage according to Protocol Five!”

Green immediately took full command and issued orders.

As New United States troops, they reacted quickly, forming combat squads to respond to the sudden threat.

Then came the attack from the scorpions.

Massive steel tails slammed down, crushing an armored vehicle flat. With a single sweep across the battlefield, terrifying blades sliced dozens of soldiers clean in half.

“Deploy the vehicles! Use armor-piercing rounds immediately!”

Seeing that level of destruction, Green didn’t hesitate for a second.

Mechs and armored vehicles surged forward through the ranks, charging straight at the scorpion robots.

Boom!

Large-caliber armor-piercing rounds roared out of the cannons. Amid the explosion and fireball, a massive claw fell to the ground—one scorpion robot had been damaged.

Just as a flicker of satisfaction crossed Green’s face, the wounded scorpion let out a furious roar. Its back slowly opened, unleashing a storm of honeycomb missiles. In an instant, the unprepared troops suffered massive losses.

But that same moment created an opening. A noncommissioned officer equipped with a Sandevistan charged forward, clutching a bomb, and leapt straight into the barrage.

Boom!

With a deafening explosion, the first scorpion robot was officially destroyed.

Green had barely managed to breathe out in relief when his expression turned grim. That single scorpion robot alone had cost them nearly five hundred casualties, along with an unknown number of armored vehicles and mechs.

And there were still dozens of those war machines on the field.

For the first time, Green began to doubt whether the forces he had brought were truly enough.

Suddenly, his face changed.

He remembered the one thing that absolutely could not be lost in this battle—

the missile vehicles.
