Chapter 201: The Unexpected
Bang!
With Wilson’s kick, the car door slammed shut—but he’d overlooked the fact that Jessica was still inside.
Realizing things had gone bad, Jessica shot a glance at the other person in the car and immediately reached out with her massive hand.
The driver’s face went pale. He tried to draw the pistol at his waist, but it was already too late.
Crash!
A tremendous force smashed into his head, shattering the window. A body with a caved-in skull was hurled straight out through the broken glass.
“Get in the car!”
Seeing this, Wilson instinctively took a step back. No other reason—the Chevillon Emperor’s windows were bulletproof glass…
Jackie seized the split second of Wilson’s hesitation, yanked the door open, and vaulted straight into the driver’s seat.
At the same time, the surrounding personnel raised their weapons and opened fire.
The instant gunfire erupted, Wilson rolled backward and roared, “You idiots! Are you trying to get me killed too?!”
...
“Why hasn’t Jackie responded yet? Don’t tell me something happened.”
Pilar frowned, unable to suppress the worry in his voice.
“Possible. Let’s head over and check.”
Falco nodded, then floored the accelerator, charging straight toward Jackie’s position.
As the fire grew heavier, Jackie and Jessica exchanged a look, ducked low, and slammed the gas.
The heavy Chevillon Emperor surged forward. The men blocking the way turned pale, tossing aside their weapons and diving out of the way.
Boom!
With a thunderous crash, the Emperor smashed through two blocking cars and burst out onto open ground.
At that moment, the squad leader—wearing Jackie’s face—rushed out, shouting, “Bunch of useless trash!”
He raised the Nekomata Sniper Rifle.
Whoosh—
An electromagnetic crack rang out as a blue arc instantly sliced through the Chevillon Emperor’s tire.
What happens when a speeding car blows a tire with no one in control? It flips.
Boom!
The Chevillon Emperor rolled across the ground several times before slamming heavily to a stop.
Inside, Jackie and Jessica were thrown around violently, stars exploding in their vision.
Bang!
Jackie kicked the twisted door open, but didn’t rush out. The attack just now had already told him enough.
“Tch—I think I’m hurt.”
Jackie immediately turned around. Jessica was grimacing in pain. His eyes locked onto her abdomen, where a black metal spike jutted out clearly—some broken part of the car had pierced straight through her.
Jackie assessed the situation and locked onto the problem.
“Hang in there!”
He extended his mechanical arm. With a screech of twisting metal and Jessica’s suppressed groan, the jagged iron spike—likely part of the door frame—was ripped free. The cost was that her wound worsened slightly.
Still better than waiting to die here.
“Hold on. Once Pilar gets here, we’ll have healing spray.”
Jackie gave her a quick look, then climbed out to check the situation.
“Hey! I see Jackie and Jessica!”
Pilar spotted Jackie pinned beside the overturned car the moment he leaned out. At the same time, Lucy broke through the enemy netrunner’s interference and reconnected their comms.
“Jackie, are you two okay?!”
“I’m fine, but Jessica’s hurt!”
“What the hell happened? Why did they suddenly attack?!”
“We’ll talk about that later, you idiot! You wanna turn into a roasted skewer right now?!”
Jackie snapped at Pilar, then remembered the earlier strike.
“They’ve got electromagnetic sniper rifles. Be careful!”
The words had barely left his mouth when an arc of electricity shot straight toward Falco.
Zzzzt!
Falco reacted instantly, slamming the brakes and throwing the car into a drift. The shot missed by a hair.
Even so, it left him drenched in cold sweat.
“Oh hell—shit! I’ve never been this thrilled in my life!”
He shouted to vent the fear, then stomped the accelerator, weaving in an S-pattern as he sped toward Jackie and Jessica.
Realizing accurate aiming was no longer possible, the captain lowered the sniper rifle, signaled a few men, and jumped into another Chevillon, speeding downhill.
At the same time, they set up the roof-mounted machine gun.
But Falco’s driving was better. He reached the wreck first and hauled Jackie and Jessica into the car.
That was when the enemy’s fire arrived.
A bullet punched cleanly into their vehicle.
“Captain, shouldn’t we keep their car and take it back to Night City?”
“Keep my ass! Block them! If they get away, this whole mission is FUCKED!”
The captain slapped the man on the back of the head and roared.
With orders received, the crew opened suppressive fire and pushed the accelerator even harder.
“They’ve got micro-missiles!”
Lucy, staring hard at the rear, suddenly shouted.
Falco saw two small devices extend from the enemy vehicle in the rearview mirror.
“Fuck!”
He cursed and floored it. The distance between the cars shrank instantly. Falco wrenched the steering wheel hard.
Boom!
An explosion detonated behind them, orange-red firelight washing across Falco’s face.
Rebecca seized the moment, climbing out and opening fire.
“Die, you assholes!”
Every shot was aimed at the machine gunner on top. Completely unprepared, the gunner was riddled full of holes in an instant.
But the close distance caused another problem—a laser-cutting grenade was thrown straight at them.
Just as everyone prepared to jump clear, Rebecca’s eyes sharpened.
She tossed aside her rifle, drew the weapon Jhin had left behind, aimed, and fired.
Bang!
Whoosh—
A terrifying crimson laser tore through the air. The machine gunner—already shredded by bullets—was sliced apart in mid-motion.
The beam carved horrific scars across the enemy vehicle as well. By sheer luck, it didn’t cut anything vital, and they immediately ducked as low as possible inside.
Jackie and the others didn’t waste the opening. They kicked the doors open and charged out.
“My turn!”
