V2: Chapter 112: Danger Warning
“You.”
“You, you.”
“And you.”
“Follow this woman to the city wall, and remember to protect her safety.”
Miranda nodded in satisfaction, waved her hand, and immediately said, “If you satisfy me, I will give you another bag of gold coins when we return.”
This was the last bag of gold coins she had; all that was left were some loose change, but that was enough for her return journey. Besides, she wouldn't even have to walk back.
Miranda had already experienced the wonders of the teleportation array. Although the teleportation process was somewhat nauseating and uncomfortable, the speed was truly amazing. It only took half a day to get here, and someone even specially drew the array to pick her up. This kind of life was simply wonderful. Previously, it would take a month or even half a month to get here.
“Thank you, Madam! We will do our best!”
The soldiers protecting her straightened their backs, their joy overflowing. They probably assumed the lady they were protecting would reward them handsomely—a reward they couldn't even imagine, perhaps several extra gold coins.
"Hmm, lead the way, take me inside."
Miranda stood arrogantly behind the soldiers.
Sure enough, there's no such thing as something money can't buy. If something can't be done, it's because there isn't enough money.
Miranda touched the last bag of money at her waist, a haughty smile spreading across her face.
The city gates slowly opened.
To be honest, after being terrified for so long, Miranda was somewhat afraid of the outside world. The moment the door opened, she didn't dare look outside, fearing she might see something horrific—a mountain of corpses, a sea of blood, or terrifying monsters.
So, Miranda closed her eyes.
Only after half a minute, hearing soldiers calling her, did she open her eyes.
Before her lay a vast, empty beach, the ground covered with pebbles and sand. The terrifying scene she had imagined wasn't there; everything looked peaceful and safe.
Miranda breathed a sigh of relief, silently encouraging herself.
Although she had witnessed magicians and magic tricks, the chances of encountering monsters shouldn't be too high. This wasn't a death sentence; with a bit of luck, nothing bad would happen. Besides, there were so many strong-looking soldiers protecting her. If danger did arise, she was sure she could escape.
Miranda, naively thinking this, followed the soldiers ahead and stepped inside the city walls.
It's just a couple of laps; nothing dangerous will happen, it can't be.
Despite her inner turmoil, despite her woman's intuition telling her that something dangerous was about to happen, Miranda, for her son's sake, gritted her teeth and entered the city.
"These two, stay close to me. Don't stand in front, stand beside me. If you're going to protect me, then you should protect me completely, shouldn't you?"
Miranda directed the remaining three soldiers to surround her, making her appear quite safe.
As the saying goes, "He who takes a man's gift is bound to him," and the soldiers immediately nodded, swarming forward and tightly surrounding Miranda.
Miranda felt somewhat relieved.
If anyone was going to die, it would be these soldiers first, giving her a chance to escape. By the time they died one by one, she estimated she would have run quite a distance. Even if some monsters were chasing her, it would probably take some time.
Thinking this, Miranda glanced at her high heels and suddenly felt a pang of regret. Why hadn't she worn men's shoes? That would have made her escape much faster.
By this time, she had already walked some distance. The more Miranda thought about it, the more panicked she became. So, she squatted down and took off her shoes.
Walking barefoot on the beach, with so many sharp objects on the ground, would surely cut her delicate feet.
"Give me your shoes." “Miranda pointed to a soldier’s shoes. “My feet hurt so much from wearing these. I don’t want to wear them. Give me your shoes.”
She immediately tossed two gold coins into the soldier’s arms.
The soldier’s face lit up with joy. Without a word, he took off his shoes.
Two gold coins for a pair of tattered shoes? What a bargain! This noblewoman is really rich. She’s practically stupid to trade two gold coins for a pair of secondhand shoes.
Tch, that’s how rich nobles are. They’re not short of money.
Thinking this, the soldier quickly pocketed the gold coins. Several other soldiers around him cast envious glances his way, wishing they had the chance.
The soldier handed the shoes to Miranda.
Miranda glanced at them, then looked at them with disgust—no, with utter disgust.
“Alright, no need to give them to me. Just throw them on the ground.” Miranda looked at the shoes lying on the ground, still covered in wet mud, even with holes, incredibly filthy. But they were the best shoes among the soldiers. She had no choice but to grit her teeth and wear them; she couldn't let the pebbles scratch her delicate feet.
Miranda felt her feet were stinking as she put them on.
No, when she got back, she absolutely had to take a rose bath in her expensive tub.
The other person walked around the seaside wall, seemingly without making a sound.
Miranda gazed into the distance, able to vaguely see the mist rising from the sea.
This was the first time in her life she had seen the ocean. Although she couldn't see clearly, only a mist, the salty wind blowing from the sea was already enough to shock her.
The smell of the sea was different from the smell of the streams and rivers she had seen before. It wasn't particularly pleasant.
Miranda sniffed hard a few times.
She had already walked one lap; one more lap and the mission would be complete.
Nothing seemed amiss during this lap, so the next lap shouldn't be any different either, right?
Miranda thought to herself, quickening her pace.
"Let's hurry, one more lap and I'll be going back."
Miranda's unease intensified.
She had a feeling that something terrible was about to happen to her.
