V2: Chapter 126: Undisguised Concern
"Walden, are you deaf?"
Gael grabbed Walden by the back of the collar and with a gentle tug, Walden stumbled back several steps and fell heavily onto the grass.
Walden timidly raised his head, meeting Gael's angry eyes. His body began to tremble, his eyes filled with fear.
“Brother, brother.”
“What are you doing here? Making such a racket.” Gael looked down at Walden. “I could hear your commotion from far away. What’s going on?”
Walden smiled awkwardly. “Brother, did I disturb you?”
“No.” Gael smiled, a hint of mockery in his voice. “You didn’t disturb me. I was just curious and came to see.”
“Phew~”
Walden breathed a sigh of relief and started grinning. He was just pretending to be friendly with the maids in front of him. “I was playing games with the maids. I’m glad I didn’t disturb you, brother.”
“Oh~”
Gael’s face was full of disdain. He looked at the row of bewildered maids in the distance.
“You’re living quite the life, having so many pretty maids to play with. Heh~”
After saying that, he paused, his tone becoming increasingly sarcastic.
"That's true, after all.... with your status, it seems like this is all you can do to pass the time. Sigh, sometimes I'm quite envious of you, living such a carefree and happy life every day, unlike me..."
A sudden surge of superiority rose within him.
"Unlike me, I have to rush through those endless, tedious courses every day, and my father sometimes gives me a lot of orders that I have to carry out. Every day is just busy, busy, busy. You're so lucky, able to live so carefree~ Isn't it just a life of mediocrity? Quite enviable~"
Gael's smile widened, the humiliation he'd suffered in front of the king finally vented on Walden with his sarcastic remarks.
"Ah..."
Walden wasn't stupid; of course, he could hear the mockery in the other's tone. However, he simply smiled ingratiatingly, got up from the ground, and brushed the dust and dirt off his clothes.
“Brother, I do envy you too. I wish I had just as many things to do. Sigh, you know my status... I don't have that right... sigh~”
Gael laughed even more heartily.
Of these two illegitimate sons, he liked Walden the most. Because Walden always went along with his words, was very perceptive, knew how to belittle himself and elevate others, and had a sweet tongue. Most importantly, he was cowardly, without any ulterior motives, only thinking about eating, drinking, and having fun every day, not studying, and never trying to gain attention from the king.
“Heh.”
Gael patted Walden's shoulder. “It's alright. Once you get busy, you'll realize how painful it is. But I don't think you'll ever realize that in this lifetime.”
“Brother, I know.”
Walden understood the meaning behind the other's words. He nodded and bowed, flashing a fawning smile.
“Alright, you can continue playing games with your maid sisters, but don't be so loud, it's not good for others to see.”
“Okay, brother, then…”
Gael patted Walden twice more, the force increasing.
“I'm leaving now. Enjoy your life, Walden, my dear brother.”
After saying that, Gael turned and walked away with a flourish.
How satisfying!
He'd finally vented all the anger he'd suffered in front of the king after his sarcastic remarks. Gael was in high spirits, even humming a tune as he walked.
Unbeknownst to him, the moment he turned away, Walden's lips instantly drooped, a half-smile playing on his lips, watching his retreating figure with a deep, meaningful gaze, his eyes filled with a heavy killing intent.
“Brother, keep laughing.”
Let's see how long you can keep laughing. I'll see if you can still laugh so happily then.
Walden took a deep breath, and a smile returned to his face as he glanced back at the maids. However, this smile was somewhat exaggerated.
"Alright, my brother's gone, you can continue playing now~"
The sounds of playful banter and roughhousing returned, and the person who had been secretly observing them left. Walden glanced at the person's figure out of the corner of his eye and sneered.
Doris is truly cautious.
Ever since Liang Di appeared, he has been frequently watched by Doris's people. And it's not just him; the other illegitimate children are the same.
Inside the Langwendi Mansion
"Gael invited me to the palace in his name?"
Liang Di's brows furrowed tightly, her face filled with disgust.
This sentence was overheard by Liang Lin, who happened to be passing by.
"What? Who invited you to the palace again?"
Liang Lin instantly became alert.
"Didn't you say last time that the old king had taken a liking to you? This invitation is probably for another reason."
"It wasn't the king, it was Gael." Liang Di dreamed of the burgundy envelope in her hand. "However, I know it wasn't Gael who wanted to invite me. How could Doris let her son contact me? It must be that old king; he's been eyeing me all along."
Liang Di thought for a moment, then continued, "No, it shouldn't be said that he's eyeing me. He's eyeing our current Langwendi family. He's getting increasingly anxious lately, hehe... it seems he feels the Langwendi family has become a threat to him."
Liang Di looked at the bill on the table and nodded in satisfaction.
"It's normal for him to feel threatened, after all…" Liang Di smiled broadly, her eyes gleaming with gold coins, "If I were the king, I would also be wary of those nobles who are even richer than me."
"Then, are you going to the palace? When are you going?" Liang Lin was still concerned about this.
Since her heartfelt conversation with Liang Di, her concern had become more undisguised, though she still followed it with a sarcastic remark.
“If he invites me, I definitely have to go.”
Liang Di hesitated for a moment, her eyes flashing. “But before I go, I need to sow discord between Doris and the King.”
“What do you mean?”
“To sow discord between her and the King,” Liang Di chuckled. “Even though it won’t have a huge impact on them, I’ll be happy to add a little trouble to their lives.”
Liang Lin wholeheartedly agreed. She was just as wicked; the two were birds of a feather, both rotten to the core.
“Then.... do you still want me to go to the palace with you tomorrow?” Liang Lin finally asked the most crucial question.
