V2: Chapter 172: A Major Event Occurs
“I told my sister that, but she absolutely refused to go to the palace. Sigh… I’m really worried about her, so...”
Doris hadn’t finished speaking when she glanced at the king’s reaction. As she expected, the king craned his neck, eagerly listening to her.
“So, I had her stay at the Duke of Brewster’s house, which is closest to the palace. Luckily, they have several young masters and ladies around my sister’s age there, so I figured she wouldn’t be unhappy.”
The king leaned back in his chair, the anxious expression on his face gone, replaced by a thoughtful look.
“Oh…”
“However, Doris, I think you’d better bring your sister to the palace. It’s not safe for a girl to be out there alone.”
Heh, now he knows how to be considerate of a beautiful woman.
Doris, trembling with fear, lowered her head. "I wanted to, but children are stubborn, and I can't win against her. Sigh... In the end, I, as the older sister, am not as effective as Mother."
"Hmm, Doris, you really spoil her a bit too much."
Doris kept her head down, not daring to look up, looking like a child who had done something wrong.
It wasn't that she didn't want to bring Philippa into the palace; the plan would indeed be difficult to carry out outside. It's just that she really had no choice; that magic circle, with her and those traitors, was truly impossible to destroy.
"Alright, Doris, you've been running around these past few days; you must be quite tired. Go back and get some rest."
The King didn't insist that Doris bring Philippa into the palace again. After all, Doris was his wife in name only, and he had to keep his affair a secret from her, otherwise it would damage his royal reputation.
The Duke of Brewster... on the surface, he was the King's loyal dog, but in reality, he followed Doris, making him a double agent.
The King often had his affairs at the Duke of Brewster's house, which shows how much he trusted him.
"That makes things much easier."
After Doris left, the King stood up and paced back and forth in his room, grinning from ear to ear, his beard trembling.
Meanwhile.
"Miss Liang Di, Doris is back."
At night, a young boy crouched outside the window, while Liang Di and Liang Lin stood inside the room.
"Doris, when did she leave?"
"When I told you, it was because I realized she was gone, but I really don't know exactly when."
Niclers scratched his head. "I'm just a bastard pretending to be crazy in the palace, so I only find out about many things very late. I don't dare to plant too many spies in the palace. Doris... she's very clever."
"I understand."
Liang Di leaned against the wall, moonlight streaming through the window onto her face. Her brows were slightly furrowed as she stroked her chin, deep in thought.
"What did she go to do?"
Liang Lin didn't like to think things through, and she couldn't figure out what Doris could be doing either.
Niclers couldn't figure it out either, so he shrugged, spread his hands, and shook his head, indicating he didn't know either.
So, both of them turned their hopeful gazes to Liang Di.
Liang Di leaned against the wall, her posture unchanged, her brows furrowing deeper and deeper. She couldn't figure out why, and she wanted to understand what Doris had been doing all this time.
"The only thing I'm certain of... well, not the only thing I'm certain of, but the only thing I can roughly guess is that Doris went to the beach."
"Just two months ago, the magicians in the Seaside Magic Tower told me that they were all trapped in an illusion, but no one was harmed; it seemed to be just to trap them for a while. Of course, some people suffered minor injuries, but nothing fatal. This illusion... didn't seem to pose much of a danger."
"I suspect that was Doris's doing, which coincides with the time she left. Doris would definitely have used a teleportation array... The traitor hasn't been completely eliminated. That time the group was trapped in the illusion at the Seaside Magic Tower wasn't the work of Tentacle Monster at the beach; it was deliberate, done by an inside agent!"
Liang Di spoke almost without pausing, rattling off this long passage.
"No, I must tell Octaville about this immediately."
Liang Di had already told Octaville about Doris's disappearance. Now it seems something bad is definitely going to happen soon, something serious. She hurt Gael and threatened Doris last time; this woman is definitely going to cause trouble.
While Liang Di was drawing the teleportation array, the King had already sneaked into Duke Brewster's house under the moonlight.
"Your Majesty, why have you come so suddenly?"
Duke Brewster feigned surprise.
Of course, it was all an act. Doris had already told everyone that the King would definitely come to his house either tonight or tomorrow night, and warned him to be careful. He thought the King would at least wait until the second night, but he couldn't resist and come to him that very night.
The King removed his black hat and his disguised black cloak, handing them to Duke Brewster.
“Your Majesty, none of the young ladies came today. I didn’t know you were coming, and I didn’t inform them in advance…” Duke Brewster, looking utterly apprehensive, hung his black cloak on the rack.
The King waved his hand dismissively.
“Who said I wanted those young ladies?”
“Well, that’s…”
The King’s smile was somewhat lewd, lacking the demeanor of a monarch. He looked towards the second floor of Duke Brewster’s house.
“I heard from my Queen that she has entrusted her sister to you?”
Duke Brewster feigned surprise, then became apprehensive once more.
“Your Majesty, you mean, you mean, you want to... Miss Philippa...”
He didn’t finish his sentence; everyone was a seasoned veteran, and of course, they all understood.
The King nodded, putting his hands behind his back.
“Yes, is Miss Philippa staying on the second floor? Or the third?”
“This…” Duke Brewster appeared very troubled.
"Hmm?"
The king glared at him, and he immediately lowered his head, whispering, "Your Majesty, Miss Philippa is in the third room around the corner on the second floor."
"Good," the king nodded, beckoning to the man, "I'm going up now. You know what I'm going to do, just like always. But this time, I want you to personally stand guard at the door. If I call you, you go in. The young girl is still impetuous; if she can't handle things, you know what will happen."
