V3: Chapter: 27: Turning Point
“But…”
Liang Di placed her hand on her stomach.
“Right now… I don’t think I can handle these things.”
“Yes, I know you can’t handle it. Let’s talk about it after you give birth. I came today to tell you so you can prepare in advance. The Magic Tower is short-handed right now. Have Gladys go back, and Laura stay with you.”
After saying this, Octaville went to find Gladys. Gladys was dragged away with a long face. She never liked fighting and was particularly timid; now she was being forced into it.
After Octaville left, the atmosphere between Liang Lin and Liang Di became somewhat tense.
“Is things getting unsettled again?” Liang Lin asked.
Liang Di sighed.
“It’s not that things are getting unsettled again; it’s more like there’s never been peace. For hundreds of years, there hasn’t been peace. But, well, there have never been so many incidents. Recently, things have been happening frequently.”
Liang Lin’s brows furrowed as well.
"What should we do? Are you really going to deal with Octaville right after giving birth? You should rest for a few months. You're carrying a normal baby, not a tentacle one, which requires a long recovery period. You definitely can't do any strenuous exercise in the first month."
Liang Di sighed, then comforted Liang Lin.
"It's okay, Sister Liang Lin. You know my constitution is different from ordinary humans. Maybe I won't be too weak after giving birth?"
Liang Lin knew she couldn't persuade Liang Di otherwise; only after giving birth could she know how Liang Di's body would be.
"Then let's talk about it after you give birth."
Days passed peacefully, everyone was quite calm, except for Gladys, who, upon returning to the Langwendi mansion, threw herself into Laura's arms and burst into tears.
"Waaaaaah!"
"I never want to go to the Magic Tower again! I never want to deal with those tentacles with them again! It's disgusting, it's terrifying! I never want to again!"
Gladys cried helplessly.
"Well, how about this... I can go for you for two days. You can stay at the Langwendi mansion for those two days. Of course, I can only go for you three or four days a month, no more."
"Wow, really Sister?!"
Gladys' eyes lit up instantly, even sparkling.
Goodness, she even changed how she addressed her.
"Sister Laura, you're such an angel! You're such a good person! You're just like those saints!"
Although, "saint" here is a compliment.
Laura sighed helplessly. If she didn't go for Gladys for two days, this girl would keep nagging her until she went to sleep.
The next day, Laura went to the Magic Tower in Gladys' place.
Octaville was visibly startled when she saw Laura, glancing behind her but not seeing Gladys.
"Where's Gladys? Is she slacking off again? What's wrong with her today?"
Octaville frowned.
"I'm giving her a chance to gain experience; after all, she has the blood of the Langwendi family flowing through her veins. She's got potential, but she just lacks ambition."
Laura didn't know how to refute these words; Octaville was right.
"Hmm… Gladys seems to have been frightened. I told her I'd cover for her this time, just for two or three days. After that, she'll handle everything."
What she said made sense.
Octaville felt helpless. They were in a hurry, and they couldn't bring Gladys back—that would be a waste of magic. They were short-handed, so they had no choice but to put Laura to the task.
“Alright, Laura, pack your things. Come with us today, but the scene might be a bit stimulating. I remember you tend to faint quite easily, so don't faint again today.”
Laura's cheeks flushed slightly after hearing this.
“Uh, um…”
“I know. I've gotten much braver lately, so I shouldn't faint suddenly again.”
“I hope so.”
Octaville gave her a deep look before having someone draw a teleportation circle on the ground.
“We still have a day's journey ahead, we won't arrive until tomorrow. I'll tell you what happened on the way; just hearing about it might give you goosebumps.”
After everyone had rested, Octaville came to find Laura.
“Laura, you're the only one here who doesn't know what happened. Let me tell you, to prepare you mentally, otherwise you might easily throw up when you get there.”
Laura immediately sat up straight.
Octaville, usually so carefree, is suddenly so serious; something terrible must have happened.
"It's still a small village. All the recent events happened in this village."
"Have you heard about the massacre of the village last time, Laura?" Octavian asked.
Laura hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
"I heard from Miss Liang Di that there wasn't a single survivor. It was so cruel..."
Octaville nodded as well.
"For those mindless tentacles, that was just an appetizer."
"This time, it was even worse. If last time the tentacles tore everyone's bodies to pieces, this time it's more like the tentacles parasitized everyone's bodies, causing them to explode and die."
Octaville's expression grew increasingly grave.
“Before, there was only one parasite, and one person would explode and die. The rest would either be trapped in illusions or torn apart. But this time, the entire village exploded and died. The knights who went to clean up vomited. They only managed to clean up part of it; there's still some left to clean up.”
“You understand? Those knights vomited every time they saw it. They couldn't clean it up at all. That's enough to prove how bloody the scene was. There must be internal organs and skin fragments everywhere.”
“Hmm… you should prepare yourself mentally. Don't be vomiting and fainting when you get there.”
Laura's face turned pale after hearing this. She suddenly regretted coming in Gladys's place. She really couldn't bear to see such a scene; she was sure she would faint.
But now that she was here, there was no reason to run away.
Octaville observed Laura's expression, and she suddenly remembered a story Laura had told her a long time ago about her lost memories.
