V3: Chapter 38: She Woke Up
Laura could only watch helplessly as the tentacles drew closer, the icy touch washing over her once more. She struggled desperately, but the tentacles' strength was too great; she couldn't resist. Just then, Laura seemed to hear a familiar voice echoing in her ears.
"Laura, wake up!"
"Wake up quickly!"
The voice was anxious and concerned, sounding as if it came from a distant place.
Laura abruptly opened her eyes, finding herself lying in bed. The moonlight shone brightly outside the window, and everything seemed to have returned to calm.
She breathed heavily, her heartbeat gradually returning to normal.
But she knew it was only a temporary relief.
The tentacles in the darkness, the desolate ruins, the deep voice… everything still resonated in her mind, unforgettable.
Laura tried to recall who that familiar voice belonged to, but her memory was as hazy as if swallowed by a thick fog.
She only knew that the voice had given her a glimmer of warmth and hope, providing a sliver of solace in this endless nightmare.
The surroundings were quiet; she seemed to be alone in the room. But when Laura looked down, she found Gladys nestled beside her, drooling in her sleep.
Seeing Gladys there, Laura's mood relaxed considerably, less tense than before.
"This girl, really, her sleeping posture is as ugly as ever."
Laura muttered under her breath. Although she didn't want to wake Gladys, she hadn't eaten for days; the magicians in the tower had been supplying her with magical nourishment, and her body was really frail. Even just lifting the covers took a lot of effort.
"Phew~"
She still had to wake Gladys.
How could she be sleeping so soundly? I'd been looking after her for ages, but she hadn't woken up.
"Gladys."
"Gladys, wake up."
Laura gently nudged Gladys. "Ugh."
Gladys didn't know what she was dreaming about; her drool was flowing more and more. When she was pushed, she instinctively wiped the drool from her mouth. One eye was wide open, the other half-closed. She sat up, looking rather unintelligent.
"What happened, what happened?"
She wiped the drool from her mouth.
"Gladys..."
Laura's voice rang out.
Gladys jolted awake. Her other half-closed eye widened, her eyes finally symmetrical, making her look less intelligent.
"Laura!!!"
"Laura!!! You're finally awake! You're finally awake!!"
Gladys shouted excitedly, her voice so loud it seemed it could echo throughout the entire Magic Tower.
"You're finally awake, waah..."
Gladys, ignoring everything else, hugged Laura tightly.
Laura glanced at her with slight disdain, at her drool-covered face. But seeing the tear-streaked face and that concerned look in her eyes, she felt too embarrassed to say anything, and a warmth filled her heart. She gently patted the other's back.
"I'm fine, I'm fine, don't be so sad."
Gladys wouldn't listen, still wailing as if someone had died.
Laura didn't have time to listen to her crying.
"Gladys, go quickly and call Miss Liang Lin, Miss Liang Di, and the Tower Master over. I have something very important to tell them. Go quickly, where are they now?"
Hearing this, Gladys finally stopped crying. She sobbed, "Today, today is Miss Liang Di's delivery day. They're all at the Langwendi residence."
"Ah..."
Laura drawled.
Her timing in waking up was really unfortunate.
But it was good; she woke up after Miss Liang Di gave birth, not a few days before, to avoid causing them trouble.
"Have I been unconscious for so many days? Miss Liang Di has already given birth."
"Yes."
Gladys nodded, threw back the covers, and got out of bed. She was still in her pajamas and hurriedly began to change.
"Laura, wait for me here. I'm changing and going to the Langwenqi Mansion to call them all over. Telling them that you have something very important to tell them."
"Wait!"
Laura called out, stopping Gladys who was undressing.
Gladys turned around, puzzled, at the sound of the call.
"What's wrong? We're all girls. I'm changing here, so I should be able to..."
Laura shook her head.
What's going on here?
“That’s not what I meant. I meant you shouldn’t go today. It’s already so late.”
Laura glanced out the window.
“It’s probably past midnight now, right? Miss Liang Di just gave birth, she’s so tired. They’ve probably finished taking care of her and are asleep. Let’s not go wake them. Hmm… let’s go wake them tomorrow morning. There’s no rush.”
Gladys asked, “Oh, Laura, didn’t you say you had something very important to tell them? Aren’t you in a hurry?”
“Hmm… even if I were in a hurry, it wouldn’t take much time. It’s only a few hours. Okay, Gladys,” Laura patted the spot next to her, “Come up and get some more sleep. Go find them after you wake up.”
Just as Laura finished speaking, her stomach growled loudly at that inopportune moment. Her face flushed slightly.
She hadn’t eaten in a long time.
Gladys smiled, a silly smile.
“Well, I’ll go get you some food. After you’ve eaten, we’ll go to sleep, and then I’ll go to the Langwendi mansion tomorrow morning.”
“Okay.”
Laura didn’t try to be stubborn. She rubbed her stomach; she was indeed very hungry.
Gladys lit an oil lamp and placed it by the bedside, then happily skipped out of the room to get some food.
When she returned, Laura saw a small basket of cookies and some blood clots in her arms. The cookies were for her, and the blood clots were definitely for herself.
“Hey~”
Gladys handed the basket of cookies to Laura.
“I’m hungry too, so I can have a snack with you.”
Laura took the basket of cookies, hugged it to her chest, grabbed a handful, and eagerly stuffed them into her mouth, wolfing them down.
“Mmm~”
It had been so long since she’d tasted anything so sweet and delicious.
Laura's face lit up with happiness, her eyes narrowing into slits.
The two ate, but Gladys's mouth didn't stop; even the sweet blood clots couldn't stop her.
"Laura, while you were unconscious, I kept feeling like you were having nightmares, always sweating profusely, and whimpering. Did something terrible happen to you?"
