V3: Chapter 39: The Key to Close the Door
Laura recalled her dream, finding it quite frightening, especially the sticky tentacles that kept clinging to her.
"Hmm, these days, I keep having nightmares, always replaying the same scene, and I can't wake up. Later, I also dreamed about other things, but they were all blurry; I can only remember the general outline. So, I'll have to tell the Tower Master about these things; she should be able to analyze them."
Gladys asked Laura, "Then, then, then! Did anything interesting happen?"
Always thinking about interesting things, this girl doesn't know tension or fear unless she encounters danger. Her carefree personality is truly enviable.
"Nothing, just some very scary things. You shouldn't ask anymore; it's almost time to sleep, or you'll scare yourself awake."
Laura waved her hand, put down the small basket in her hand, and wiped the cookie crumbs from the corner of her mouth.
"Alright, go to sleep and rest. I can't sleep, I'll get up and write something."
After saying this, Laura threw off the covers and got out of bed. Having eaten some biscuits earlier, she had replenished some energy, and now she had the strength to get out of bed and do some things.
Gladys had been exhausted from worrying about Laura these past two days. Seeing that Laura was in good spirits, she felt relieved and climbed back into bed, falling into a deep sleep.
The next day.
Octaville and Hilary returned early, followed by Liang Lin and Liang Di.
Liang Di, as expected of the tentacle girl, had an amazingly strong recovery ability. She had given birth yesterday, and today she was already able to get out of bed and walk, and she seemed to be in pretty good spirits.
"Laura, you're finally awake."
Octaville patted Laura's shoulder.
Laura didn't hesitate.
“Lord Tower Master, everyone, I... I think I’ve remembered something.”
“I was unconscious for so long, and I had a very, very long dream. How should I put it? I can only remember a few things now, but I remember a lot of key things.”
Laura seemed hesitant; she pursed her lips.
Octaville and Liang Di looked at Laura expectantly, their eyes pleading as if they were eyeing a delicious feast.
“I… am the key.”
The key?
“What does that mean? A key? To open something?”
Laura thought for a moment, then shook her head. “No, no, it shouldn’t be that kind of key. It should be said to be… a key to close, not a key to open.”
“.....”
Although she didn’t quite understand, with a little thought, she could grasp the general meaning.
“So, in the sea, I am the key.”
“.....”
“So, you are the key that sealed… the... tentacle... in the sea?”
Octaville spoke each word with uncertainty in her voice.
“Yes… yes!”
Laura hesitated again, but finally nodded heavily.
“That’s right, I am the key, the key that sealed that tentacle.”
In that sea shrouded in eternal gloom, the somber sea stretched silently beneath the boundless horizon.
The surface wasn’t shimmering; instead, it possessed a oppressive dark gray, like a massive lead plate, heavy and suffocating. Occasionally, a few thin rays of light attempted to pierce the thick clouds, but could only barely trace faint paths on the surface before being swallowed by the boundless darkness.
With the rise and fall of the waves, something seemed to be surging beneath the surface—an indescribable call from the abyss, chilling to the bone.
Occasionally, a faint light flickers beneath the surface, seemingly the eye of some unknown creature from the deep sea, peering into the world.
In the darkness, enormous tentacles can be vaguely seen moving slowly, silently traversing the shadows.
These tentacles are exceptionally large, their surfaces covered in a sticky mucus, likely composed of some unknown biological tissue—both soft and tough, exuding an indescribable sense of terror.
Even more astonishing are the massive chains coiled around these tentacles. These chains appear ancient and heavy, their surfaces marked by the marks of time and corroded rust, suggesting they have existed in this sea for countless centuries.
Each link of the chains is tightly connected, like an invisible net, binding the tentacles firmly. Yet, even so, the tentacles struggle relentlessly, trying to break free and regain their freedom.
Around the tentacles, the seawater becomes unusually heavy and viscous, likely influenced by some mysterious force. The seabed churned and murky, forming eerie whirlpools that resembled the ocean's furious roar, attempting to devour everything in its path.
In the somber depths of this ocean, tentacles and chains created a chilling scene.
When night fell, the writhing of the tentacles and the clanging of the chains echoed from the depths like the whispers of demons, instilling fear and keeping sleep impossible.
In this gloomy sea, every subtle sound was amplified a thousandfold, impossible to ignore.
The sea breeze howled across the surface, carrying a biting chill.
And the deep-sea tentacles and their chains lay there silently, like guardians of this ocean.
The tentacles awaited an unknown moment; when the power of the spell dissipated, they would break free of their restraints and return to the world, bringing endless disaster and terror.
In that dream, suddenly, the air around her seemed to freeze, and an unusual golden light quietly enveloped her.
This light, both warm and mysteriously enigmatic, felt as if it had traveled from ancient times, gently touching every inch of her skin. As Laura was astonished, she found herself gradually becoming lighter, her form blurring until she completely merged into the radiant light.
As the light faded, Laura discovered that she was no longer her original form, but a delicate key.
This key radiated a faint golden light, its surface engraved with intricate and ancient patterns.
A strange sensation welled up within her; she felt an incredible connection between herself and this key, able to sense subtle changes in her surroundings, even the faint calls emanating from a distant keyhole.
The surrounding scenery changed accordingly. The familiar space was replaced by a phantom golden realm, where there was no concept of time or space, only endless possibilities and exploration.
Laura realized that she had been given a special mission.
