V3: Chapter 48: Anomaly

“Don’t rush, let’s take a closer look. A few more laps, we should find something useful.”

Octaville walked ahead with her hands behind her back. Gladys, though reluctant, dared not say anything, only carrying Laura on her back, dutifully following behind, circling again and again, silently cursing each lap.

Finally, after the sixth lap, just as Gladys was about to burst out complaining, Octaville suddenly pointed ahead and said to Gladys,

“This looks strange, shall we go in and take a look?”

Gladys’s eyes lit up, and she immediately looked in the direction Octaville was pointing, only to find that it was in the direction Octaville was pointing—a dense forest.

From the outside, the forest seemed normal. However, the closer they got, the more eerie the atmosphere became.

The moonlight, like fine silver gauze, gently spread across the forest, draping the land in an eerie veil. The trees soared into the clouds, their intertwined branches casting dappled shadows that swayed gently in the silent night.

The wind, seemingly carrying a chill and unease, whistled through the treetops, its low, drawn-out mournful sound like the whispers of the dead, sending a shiver down one's spine. The rustling of leaves against each other was exceptionally clear in the stillness of the night.

Under the moonlight, a thin layer of moss covered the tree trunks, gleaming with an eerie green light, blending seamlessly with the surrounding gloom, adding to the sinister atmosphere.

Occasionally, one or two nocturnal animals would flit through, emitting sharp, urgent cries that shattered the silence, only to be quickly swallowed by the boundless darkness, leaving behind only a series of chilling echoes.

In this eerie forest, every tree seemed to possess its own soul, standing there silently. The vines coiling around the tree trunks, like twisting snakes, spread silently, adding to the eeriness and unease.

Gurgle, gurgle.

Some kind of bird always seemed to add to the already terrifying atmosphere of the forest, further suppressing Gladys's curiosity.

'Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap, is this for real? How could she even think of going into such a terrifying place? I'm practically dying just standing here, and she's just standing there like nothing's wrong! Ahhh, what do I do? I don't want to go in! If I could beat her, I would definitely run! This place is terrifying just to look at!'

Gladys could only think these things silently, her gaze shifting back and forth, wiping the cold sweat from her forehead.

Gladys swallowed hard, glancing anxiously at Octaville beside her. But facing Octaville's resolute gaze, her last shred of defense crumbled. Still clinging to a sliver of hope, she asked Octaville,

"Tower Master, are we really going in now? It looks so dark. Can we wait until daytime?"

Gladys's pleading eyes clearly showed she didn't want to enter this eerie forest. The sheer chill emanating from it terrified her, making her hesitant to take a single step.

However, Octaville's steps were unwavering. Without a word, she strode straight into the forest. The dark environment couldn't deter her, nor could it diminish her determination to find clues, leaving Gladys standing alone.

Watching Octaville's figure disappear into the forest, Gladys looked left and right, her heart filled with anxiety. Fear prevented her from taking a step, but she couldn't disobey Octaville's command. After countless internal struggles, the sudden howling of animals behind her filled her with panic. She could only steel herself and follow.

Once inside the forest, Gladys felt her teeth chattering. She hugged her shoulders, trembling all over, cautiously following behind Octaville.

"Tower... Tower Master, this place looks so eerie! What if some monster suddenly jumps out? What will we do if a monster does? You'll protect me, right? This chilly feeling... I'm so scared!"

Octaville, afraid the other would continue chattering, quickly reassured her, "Don't worry, if a monster suddenly jumps out, I'll kill it instantly. You know my strength. But if you keep going like this, we might really be targeted by some monsters soon, since you've been making noise."

If Gladys said these words, no one around would believe them, but if Octaville said them, Gladys trusted her completely. After all, the Tower Master was the Tower Master, the new master of the Magic Tower.

"Yes, yes, yes, I'll try my best~"

After receiving the assurance, Gladys's eyes regained their light, her steps became firmer, and she no longer felt so afraid.

“I can’t search alone, Gladys. As a vampire, your night vision is definitely better than mine. Observe your surroundings carefully and see if there’s anything suspicious. If you find anything suspicious, tell me immediately.”

Octaville was suddenly glad she had brought Gladys along. This girl’s night vision was much better than most people’s.

“Okay!”

Gladys turned her little head this way and that, starting to carefully search her surroundings for anything suspicious.

She looked left and right, but it seemed there was nothing noteworthy. However, the surrounding air was becoming increasingly eerie.

Just as Gladys was concentrating on her search, a terrifying sound suddenly came from the jungle, rustling, rustling like the prelude to a monster’s long-planned attack.

Faced with such danger, Gladys, who was already tense, trembled. Gladys always reacted faster than others before danger struck.

This time, she didn’t dare to scream again, but quickly ran behind Octaville. No, "run" wouldn't be accurate; "dart" would be more fitting.

Suddenly, she darted behind Octaville, gripping her arms tightly, only daring to peek out slightly, pointing to the bushes in front of her. The invisible support emboldened Gladys, but even negative numbers multiplied together still resulted in a negative number. She whispered,

"Tower Master, there... there's movement over there, I'm scared... protect me, please protect me!"
