V3: Chapter 57: Why?

"This thing looks absolutely disgusting. Just touching it makes me want to vomit. I can't believe it. It must taste awful too. Can I really not eat it?"

Liang Di stuck out her tongue, clearly indicating she didn't really want to eat it.

Liang Lin shared Liang Di's thoughts; this thing really did look disgusting. Just looking at it made her stomach churn.

"Even if this thing could really increase your strength, you wouldn't actually eat it, would you? It looks so disgusting. How could such a thing exist?"

Liang Lin looked at it a few more times with disgust, finding it unbearable to look at.

Liang Di swallowed hard. She had originally thought that if it could be used to make a snack, she would definitely enjoy it, but now, thinking about it, she decided against it. It was simply too awful to even open her mouth.

Liang Lin and Liang Di looked at each other for a while, exchanged glances, and seemed to share the same thoughts. Then, pretending to be idle, they sat down to one side and chatted quietly.

"How about we send Carol to the Magic Tower?"

"And Philomena too."

Their discussion revolved entirely around their daughters.

Just as the two were engrossed in their discussion, excited shouts erupted from Prescott's side.

"It's done! It's done! It's finally done! Quick, Octaville! Where's Octaville? Where did she go?"

Liang Lin and Liang Di, sitting nearby, were startled, even wondering if he had been researching for too long and was going crazy. But realizing what was happening, they immediately stood up and ran towards him.

"What's wrong? Professor Prescott, why are you so excited? Have you already found the results?" “

Prescott heard the voice and turned around, only then noticing the two people jogging over.

“Oh dear, hahaha, I was so focused on this fruit that I didn't notice you two coming. When did you two get here?”

Prescott's daughter covered her mouth and chuckled at her father.

“They arrived a long time ago and have been sitting there watching us study. Dad, you're so focused, you didn't notice anything else.”

Prescott then remembered that his daughter had been researching.

“How's your research going? Anyway, I don't recall seeing this fruit before. Have you found any information about it?”

His daughter shook her head, her face full of regret.

“I haven't found anything in the books. There's absolutely no information about this fruit. I've searched in over thirty books, and it's really not in any of them.”

“Hmm…” Prescott stroked his chin, pondering for a moment…

“Alright, I understand. That's a pity.” Prescott sighed and shook his head.

"Since you two are here, go and find Octaville for me, hurry."

Liang Lin volunteered and ran outside to find Octaville.

Octaville, supported by the two, slowly walked into the room.

"So, what's the result, Professor Prescott?"

Prescott smiled happily, pointing to the fruit, and said to Octaville.

"This not only doesn't harm the human body, but it also has many benefits. It's truly a rare treasure. Of course, for humans, it only benefits their health, but for tentacles, it's a rare stimulant.

As we all know, very few things can excite tentacles. Seeing humans or feeling human blood might excite them, but that's merely a stimulus and doesn't necessarily make them stronger. However, this fruit can make a tentacle's strength incredibly powerful for a short period.

You should understand what I mean, right? This stimulant is extremely rare for tentacles, perhaps even a once-in-a-century opportunity. And I have a theory that after a tentacle consumes this fruit, even after its effects wear off, it won't experience a period of decline or any side effects."

His voice grew louder and more agitated, until finally, his gaze fell upon Liang Di beside him, his eyes filled with a desperate thirst for confirmation.

Liang Di felt a chill run down her spine at that look. It was like observing a lab rat, and she was that rat.

Although she had just declared she would never eat that ugly, disgusting fruit, hearing Prescott describe its numerous benefits, its lack of side effects, and its absence of a deterioration period, yes, her resolve wavered. She was tempted once again.

"Gulp!"

Liang Di swallowed hard, looking again at the fruit on the table, her mind in turmoil.

Although the fruit was still unsightly and smelled terrible, the change was in her mind. It had acquired intrinsic value, a value that could infinitely diminish or even negate its flaws.

"...Maybe I should give it a try."

In just a few glances, Liang Di became eager to try it again. She had felt nauseous just now, but now she wanted to give it a go.

Octaville was still somewhat worried, after all, these were just speculations, without any actual investigation.

"Professor Prescott, I'm still a little worried. There's no concrete proof. Are you sure it won't cause any harm to the body?"

Prescott nodded firmly, suddenly realizing Octaville couldn't see anything, but she still nodded vigorously.

"Of course! Who am I? You don't even trust me? If I say it won't cause any harm, then it definitely won't. Eat it without worry, you definitely won't die."

Hearing this, Octaville wanted to ask Liang Di's opinion again.

However, the words were just on the tip of her tongue when she heard Liang Lin exclaim in surprise.

"Ahhh~ Liang Di!!! You… what are you doing? That's too fast!"

 "!!"

That's right, even a fool would know that Liang Di must have already eaten a piece of the fruit.

Crunch~

The crisp sound rang out in the air.

Time seemed to stand still. Everyone held their breath, staring intently ahead, in Liang Di's direction, their expectant gazes fixed on her.

Liang Di quickly swallowed. The taste was truly difficult to savor. Having just eaten the fruit, Liang Di stood there, stunned, waiting patiently, carefully observing herself for anything unusual or strange.

'No time like the present. Just wait quietly, and my strength will improve dramatically! This feeling is wonderful! I can do whatever I want! It's so exciting!'

The wait was always long.

Everyone stared intently at Liang Di. Everything was so quiet, everything seemed as if nothing had happened. However, reality was indeed like that; nothing had happened, not as expected.

"So, how do you feel?"

A sudden question shattered the silence, and an awkward atmosphere enveloped everyone present.

"Uh... it seems... I really don't feel anything."

Liang Di looked at Prescott somewhat awkwardly, opened her mouth as if to ask if he had made a mistake, whether the fruit was actually only beneficial to humans and not to tentacles, or perhaps not to tentacle hybrids.

Suddenly, Liang Di's slightly parted lips twitched, and she immediately clenched her teeth. An unfriendly warm sensation began to spread from her chest outwards.

Before she could even properly feel it, this warmth seemed to have a mind of its own, rapidly eroding her lungs. Liang Di's breathing quickened, followed by a violent cough.

At this moment, Liang Di felt as if she were in the eye of a forest fire; the air in her lungs was so dry, a stark contrast to the cool air her body could feel around her.

Liang Di knelt on the ground, hands supporting her weight, mouth wide open, tongue darting out, trying to use its extension and retraction to push the cool air she felt into her lungs, like a dog about to die of exhaustion.

Everyone stared at Liang Di's painful and humiliating state, stunned.

"Ahhh!" "

Seemingly unable to bear the sudden torment, or perhaps trying to expel the discomfort in her lungs through a desperate scream, Liang Di let out a violent cry.

Upon hearing this, Liang Lin immediately rushed forward, kneeling beside Liang Di and grabbing Liang Di's hand, which seemed unsure of where to go.

"Liang Di!"

Liang Lin was somewhat panicked.

"What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell? Then, then quickly spit out that fruit, spit it out, spit it out, maybe it will make you feel better!"

Liang Lin was incredibly worried. Liang Di's reaction had truly frightened her, which was why she had said such a foolish thing.

Liang Di, however, unusually pushed Liang Lin's hand away, her expression abnormally ferocious, like a terrifying monster. The innocence on the girl's face had completely vanished, replaced by an expression of extreme pain and terrifying struggle.

Octaville, though blind, could hear. She heard Liang Di's cries of pain and immediately panicked as well.

"Teacher Prescott! Didn't you say this stuff wouldn't harm the tentacles at all? No side effects either? Then what's wrong with Liang Di now? Why is she screaming in so much pain?!"

Prescott was also dizzy, raising the small bottle in his hand and shaking it vigorously.

"Yeah, it clearly had no side effects, no harm whatsoever, so why is it like this? This isn't scientific, it's so strange."
