V1: Chapter 42: The Secret of the Langwendi Family Curse
“She won’t die from the fall, she’s already gone back.”
Liang Di draped a coat over Liang Lin’s shoulders. Only then did Liang Lin notice that she was now wearing comfortable, clean pajamas.
“..…”
Something’s not right.
“You, you changed me?” Liang Lin returned to bed, only then realizing what had happened. She hugged her small body tightly, her face full of wariness, looking Liang Di up and down.
“Of course, besides me, who else would help you change clothes?”
Liang Di sat down on the edge of the bed.
On the bedside table was a cup of freshly warmed hot tea. Liang Di took the tea and held it to Liang Lin’s lips.
“Have a sip first, calm down. Haven’t you always wanted to know the secret of the Langwendi family? I’ll tell you in a moment.”
Liang Lin took the hot tea, holding it in her hands, feeling the warmth from her palms.
“More than the secrets of the Langwendi family, I want to know what happened to my sister after I died, how she is now, is she in danger, and…”
Liang Lin’s gaze slowly moved from her reflection in the hot tea to Liang Di’s face.
“Liang Di, did we… know each other before?”
Liang Di’s face remained expressionless for the first part of the question, but when she heard “did we know each other before?” her mouth widened slightly, and the corners of her mouth involuntarily turned up, unable to hide the sparkle in her eyes.
“Liang Lin! You finally remembered?!”
“No.”
Liang Lin shook her head, pouring cold water on her enthusiasm.
“Oh… okay.”
Liang Di deflated again, her lips pouting slightly, head down, sullen and unhappy.
“Fine, tell me about the Langwendi family first.”
Liang Lin took a sip of hot tea.
“Our Langwendi family has a curse,” Liang Di said.
“Every few generations, a child with a curse is born, usually a girl, and most of them have silver-white hair, like a witch. Of course, white hair is also considered an ominous sign.”
After hearing this, Liang Lin's gaze unconsciously fell on Liang Di's long, silver-white hair. Beautiful hair, paired with Liang Di's bright blue eyes, made her look like a noble Persian cat.
“At first, the Langwendi family was terrified of this curse. If a baby with silver-white hair was born, they would abandon it. Later, one head of the family couldn't bear to abandon his child and kept her. As the child grew, the head of the family discovered a strange change in her; her ears became pointy, and a pair of wings sprouted from her back, like an elf from an old fairy tale.”
Ah…it sounds like a fairy tale.
Liang Lin listened intently.
Liang Di continued, "Back then, the family head was terrified of her being discovered, so he hid the child. About five years later, on the child's sixteenth birthday, her ears and wings vanished overnight. The family head was overjoyed, because he only had this one child, and he was certain she would inherit the Langwendi family fortune. So, he released the child."
"From that day on, the family head was astonished to discover that this child's business acumen and intelligence far surpassed that of her peers. This child was simply a born businessman. At the same time, he also discovered that this child could talk to animals—a talent only found in elves in ancient fairy tales."
Liang Lin nodded thoughtfully.
She had recently heard that the Langwendi family's tailor shop was flourishing. Many young masters from other prosperous families had even sent letters expressing their love for Liang Di, hoping to win her favor.
Therefore, Liang Di was the child of this generation, the one with the curse.
"At that time, everything was still developing in a positive direction, until..." Liang Di shook her head, "Until then a family head had a child with a prostitute, a child with silver-white hair. He was terrified; if word got out, it would be a disgrace to the Langwendi family. After several sleepless nights, he finally decided..."
"He decided to kill the child?" Liang Lin could guess what was going to happen next.
“Yes,” Liang Lin nodded, “Eleven years passed after he killed that child. One night, the very day he strangled his child, his body underwent a strange transformation. Animal-like fur grew on his body, and every full moon, seeing the round moon would drive him into a frenzy, wanting to tear apart any human who approached.”
“The patriarch was terrified, locking himself in his room all day, believing it was retribution for strangling his child. Then, five years later, on the very day he strangled his child, the abnormality suddenly disappeared. He discovered he could control his powers, using them when needed and retracting them when not.”
“Immediately afterward, he reopened the account books, feeling a surge of novel ideas inexplicably flooding his mind, endlessly producing them without any bottlenecks. Under his management, the family business flourished, a feeling he had never experienced before.”
Liang Lin finished her hot tea and handed the empty cup to Liang Di. Liang Di took it and called over Bellica, asking her to bring Liang Lin some dessert.
“So, it turns out this is something that can be inherited. You have to be related by blood, a member of the Langwendi family, and you have to personally kill the abnormal child.”
“From then on, these things happened frequently and spiraled out of control. Few children survive past birth. Everyone in the Langwendi family covets this seemingly divinely granted ability. With it, you can possess endless wealth, a very high status, and countless praises and flowers.”
Liang Di sneered.
“So, now you know why Auston’s eyes were full of fear and terror when he saw me?”
“Because he also wanted to kill you when you were born, right?”
Liang Di nodded.
“He abandoned me in a desolate place, thinking no one would ever pass by. But I was incredibly lucky. Octaville, your sister's… well, lover, just happened to be passing by and found me.”
Ah…
Liang Lin abruptly stopped.
She seemed to remember something.
Her memory... it seemed that when she was very young, Octaville went away for a month, and when she returned, she had a chubby little baby in her arms. The baby said something about wanting to be her playmate.
“Liang Di, when you were little, did you ever go to that snowy place on the border?”
