V1: Chapter 70: A Divine Assist

"...I didn't sleep well last night. Um, I'm going to check out the dessert shop later."

Liang Di drank a glass of milk and hurriedly left.

She still didn't know how to face Liang Lin, so she simply ran away.

"That woman is so strange..."

Liang Lin wiped her mouth.

Time to go to school.

Inside the academy, many students were discussing the masked boy from the day of the sword competition.

"I really didn't expect that someone so short could defeat his opponent in one move."

"Yeah! I bet wrong and lost two gold coins."

"I heard he's a commoner boy. If he gets strong later, he might become a knight in the capital."

"That's still a bit difficult (knights in the capital are all children from known noble families, with extremely high salaries, and commoners don't get a chance unless they're exceptionally outstanding). However, he'll most likely be sent to a better city to become a knight."

Listening to the surrounding discussion, Liang Lin remained silent and casually found a place to sit down.

That morning, because she had been thinking about Liang Di's strange reaction, Liang Lin hadn't eaten well, so she brought two boiled eggs. Now, sitting on the grass, she peeled the eggs and popped them into her mouth.

When the people around her saw her, their voices gradually quieted down.

The news that Liang Lin had signed up for the sword competition but was rejected had already spread like wildfire.

Adding to the fact that Liang Di had been traveling extensively recently, some of the students' elders were aware of the situation, and these aristocratic young masters overheard bits and pieces of their conversations.

Liang Lin ate her egg, lost in thought, pondering Liang Di's unusual reaction that morning.

However, in the eyes of the surrounding aristocratic young masters, her reaction appeared to be one of utter dejection and mental fog due to missing the sword competition.

"Sigh... what a pity."

"But what can we do? She's a girl, after all."

Several young masters who were some distance away whispered among themselves.

Finally, a kind-hearted person, who admired Liang Lin, couldn't resist and quietly sat down next to her. Liang Lin didn't notice him, continuing to eat.

This aristocratic young master scratched his head; he still harbored some resentment towards Liang Lin. With such a sharp tongue and harsh words, it was understandable that he was afraid.

“Um, that…”

The young nobleman mustered his courage and spoke, “Miss Liang Lin, you… you don’t need to be so sad.”

“Uh… hmm?”

Liang Lin’s thoughts were abruptly pulled back. She paused for a second, looking at the young nobleman, completely bewildered, not understanding what he was talking about.

“Sad?”

Sad?

Someone is sad? Who is sad? Has anyone cried?

No.

Liang Lin looked around but didn’t see anyone so sad as to cry.

As a result, her reaction made her seem even more pitiful in the eyes of these young noblemen, who felt that Liang Lin had been driven to madness. Their eyes gradually became filled with pity.

“Sigh,” one of them even began to empathize, “Miss Liang Lin, we have all witnessed your swordsmanship, and we all admire you.”

“Hmm…?”

Liang Lin still didn’t understand.

"We've all heard that you've been upset ever since you couldn't register for the swordsmanship competition. Your sister has been running around trying to help, but we heard she's been turned down too. Sigh, you two must be very sad. But, everyone has no choice... You know the Empire's rules..."

Hmm?

Liang Lin caught the key point in his words.

"What did you just say? My sister is running around trying to help with this? My sister?"

"Yes, yes, it's... Miss Liang Di."

The young master who said this flinched. Liang Lin's gaze had been so fierce, like a wild beast ready to tear him apart.

"Liang Di...? Liang Di trying to do something... you mean, the swordsmanship competition, the one where I couldn't register?"

Liang Lin unconsciously raised her voice, slightly agitated.

"Yes, yes."

Several young masters around finally realized something was wrong. One asked, "Miss Liang Lin, did you... did you don't know about this?"

"I..."

She really didn't know.

So, the reason Liang Di acted so strangely last night and this morning… could it be because she didn't handle her affairs well, and she's feeling guilty and remorseful?

Hiss~

Thinking this, Liang Lin got goosebumps all over.

It felt kind of cheesy.

Damn it.

Could this guy really like me?!

No, no, no… who would truly like someone and torment her like that? That's definitely not love.

“I… I don’t know anything about this matter, could you tell me about it?”

Liang Lin suppressed her embarrassment.

“Well… yesterday I overheard my parents talking, and I heard something like, ‘The second young lady of the Langwendi family is currently pulling strings everywhere to help the eldest young lady get a chance to participate in the sword fighting competition,’ something like that…”

Actually, there was more to it, but he didn't repeat it.

It was that sentence: "How ridiculous, since when can women participate in sword fighting competitions and have the right to go to the battlefield?"

He didn't dare repeat those words aloud. Firstly, he was afraid of upsetting Liang Lin; secondly (and most importantly), he was afraid that in a fit of anger, Liang Lin might punch him in the face and break his nose.

Liang Lin fell silent.

Class began.

"Teacher, I'm not feeling well, I want to go home," Liang Lin raised her hand.

At the aristocratic academy, teachers were exceptionally lenient with these young noblemen and ladies; they wouldn't let them attend class if they had a headache or fever.

"Miss Liang Lin, do you need to go to the infirmary?"

"No, I have a doctor at home, I'll go home now, teacher."

"Okay, Miss, please be careful on your way."

Liang Lin left the academy without incident.

As soon as she left, she regretted it.

Just now, in a moment of impulse, thinking of how exhausted Liang Di had looked after running around for her, she felt a surge of emotion, and her feelings overcame her reason. She wanted to immediately go to the Tentacle Girl to express her gratitude.

But, since she was already out... well, she decided to go to the upscale neighborhood and take a stroll. It'd been so long since she'd been. Maybe... she would bump into Liang Di and thank her in person.

She... she wasn't particularly moved.

It's just... it seems like besides her sister Hilary, no one else has ever cared so much about her affairs, going to such lengths for days...

Liang Lin walked along, awkwardly kicking at the pebbles on the ground, trying to find the right words.

"Ahem, thanks!"

"No, that seems a bit too casual... *sigh*"

"Well, thank you, Miss."

"Ugh, why does that feel even weirder? So greasy."
