Chapter 41: Prayer

"Ugh, someone say something! This march is boring enough as it is!"

"...The weather is nice."

"Is it? It’s nothing but an endless grey sky. Even the laundry would stay damp in this."

"Don't be so hard on her, Yellow. Scarlet did her best to wring those hollow words out of her limited vocabulary. Can't we find a better topic?"

"Fair enough. How about we discuss how you’re being the most insulting person here?"

"Indeed! Noise gave me data suggesting that those who dominate a verbal battle often emerge victorious in actual combat! So, how about this—let's have an insult contest!!"

"Shut up, you loud-mouthed flat-chest."

".....!"

".....!"

"She went silent."

"Leave her alone. She’s the most sensitive about it."

"It’s surprisingly peaceful."

We ran into a swarm of Bison-type Contaminated Beasts earlier, but Lancelot was stronger than I imagined. She wiped them out before anyone else could even draw their weapons.

With demonic intensity, she fired a modified gun that had absolutely ridiculous recoil. I suppose only someone with her massive frame could pull that off...

"..."

But she seemed distracted the whole time, as if she were constantly on guard against King.

"Commander, let's set up camp here."

"...Yeah."

I should stop overthinking it. Just then, I caught a scent that was unfamiliar yet somehow nostalgic.

"Is that tobacco...? Esil? What are you doing?"

"Answer: I am burning insect repellent. Mosquitoes, horseflies, and reptiles like snakes dislike the nicotine, arsenic, lead, copper, chromium, and cadmium found in tobacco smoke."

"If you’re going to burn that, do it further away. I can’t stand the smell of smoke."

"Fine by me. You’re free to move away, Yellow—if you want to get bitten by bugs, that is."

"I’ve changed my mind. I'll take a double dose of the smoke."

"It's too peaceful."

It felt as if the road ahead was going to be fraught with turmoil, like God was telling us to rest and recover our strength while we still could.

I’m not a religious person by nature, but in moments like this, I can't help but pray.

Author's Note

TL Note: Dear readers, If you're confused on who is speaking, it's due to my inability as a TL. I usually add action beats in the middle to clear up the confusion, not this time. I cannot confidently say I'm sure I know who is speaking. As such I didn’t add any action beats out of fear of misrepresenting the original intent.
