Chapter 8: Shadows Across the Convergence Valley

The valley remained unnaturally still.

Not peaceful.

Not quiet.

Still.

As if the entire area had become trapped between one heartbeat and the next.

The convergence point hovered above the battlefield, turning slowly in the crimson sky. The echo soldiers had halted their advance after Rimuru's decision to disrupt their synchronization. For the first time since they appeared, uncertainty had entered the enemy formation.

And uncertainty was something Rimuru could use.

The command unit stood motionless among the echo soldiers, its glowing eyes fixed on Tempest's forces. It wasn't attacking.

It was thinking.

Or perhaps something beyond the convergence point was thinking through it.

Either possibility was troubling.

"Everyone hold position," Rimuru ordered.

Benimaru frowned. "We're just waiting?"

"No," Rimuru replied. "We're observing."

Diablo smiled faintly.

The Eryndor commander crossed his arms. "A wise decision. Most commanders become impatient when faced with an enemy that refuses to act."

Rimuru looked toward the convergence point again.

The command unit wasn't alone anymore.

More silhouettes were beginning to form behind it.

Not fully materialized.

Not yet.

But enough to suggest reinforcements were coming.

And not the mindless kind.

"Time isn't on our side," Rimuru muttered.

Before anyone could respond, a familiar shadow emerged from the nearby forest.

Then another.

Then dozens.

The shadows moved across the ground without sound.

Shion immediately relaxed.

Benimaru smirked slightly.

Rimuru smiled.

"About time."

A figure appeared atop a nearby rock formation.

Long dark hair.

Sharp eyes.

Expressionless as ever.

Souei.

The blue-haired ninja landed silently beside Rimuru and knelt.

"My lord."

Rimuru nodded.

"Welcome back."

Souei rose smoothly.

"I completed the reconnaissance mission."

The seriousness in his voice immediately drew everyone's attention.

"What did you find?" Benimaru asked.

Souei's gaze shifted toward the convergence point.

"The disturbances are not limited to Tempest."

Nobody looked surprised.

But what he said next changed everything.

"I traveled beyond the western trade routes. Beyond the human settlements. Beyond the territories bordering Tempest."

His expression darkened.

"I found five additional convergence zones."

Silence.

The valley suddenly felt colder.

The Eryndor commander swore under his breath.

Diablo's smile disappeared.

Even Veldora narrowed his eyes.

"Five?" Rimuru asked.

Souei nodded.

"And they're growing."

The information hit like a hammer.

One convergence point was already threatening Tempest.

Five more meant this phenomenon was spreading across entire regions.

"Locations?" Benimaru asked.

Souei immediately produced a map.

Several markings had been added.

"One near the northern mountains."

He pointed.

"Two near abandoned ruins east of the trade kingdoms."

Another mark.

"One inside a forest region inhabited by powerful magical beasts."

Then another.

"And the largest..."

His finger paused.

"...appeared near an unclaimed wasteland far south."

The Eryndor commander stared at the map.

His expression hardened.

"I know that area."

Everyone looked at him.

He spoke quietly.

"In my world, that location was once a battlefield."

A silence followed.

No one liked that answer.

Because battlefields had memories.

And if convergence points were reacting to echoes of conflict...

Then ancient battlefields might be the worst possible locations.

Before further discussion could continue, a loud voice echoed from behind.

"OI! LORD RIMURU!"

The shout shattered the tension instantly.

Gobta came running across the valley.

Or rather...

Trying to run.

Ranga was carrying him at full speed.

The result looked significantly less heroic than Gobta probably intended.

"WHOOOOAAAAA!"

Gobta nearly fell off.

Ranga rolled his eyes.

Moments later, they arrived before Rimuru.

Gobta landed face-first in the dirt.

"...I'm okay."

Nobody believed him.

Shion laughed.

Benimaru sighed.

Rimuru smiled.

"Good to see you're alive, Gobta."

Gobta stood proudly.

"I brought reinforcements!"

At that moment, hundreds of wolf riders emerged from the forest behind Ranga.

Their formation spread across the valley edge.

The goblin riders quickly established defensive positions.

Ranga stepped forward.

His crimson eyes locked onto the convergence point.

A low growl escaped his throat.

Unlike most of the others, Ranga's instincts immediately sensed danger.

And he didn't like what he felt.

Not one bit.

A second force soon appeared.

Heavy footsteps shook the ground.

Massive figures emerged from the forest.

Orcs.

Disciplined.

Organized.

Led by a familiar giant.

Geld.

The commander of Tempest's construction corps and defensive forces approached calmly.

His enormous frame seemed even more imposing against the crimson sky.

He bowed respectfully.

"Lord Rimuru."

Rimuru nodded.

"Geld."

Geld looked toward the convergence point.

His expression hardened.

"My forces have evacuated nearby settlements."

That immediately earned Rimuru's approval.

While everyone else focused on combat, Geld had already protected civilians.

Exactly what Rimuru expected from him.

"No casualties?" Rimuru asked.

"None."

"Good."

Then another voice interrupted.

"WAIT FOR ME!"

Everyone turned.

A group came charging across the valley.

At their head—

Gabiru.

Naturally.

The self-proclaimed dragon newt hero skidded dramatically to a stop.

His followers arrived moments later.

"Gabiru has arrived!"

"Gabiru!"

"Gabiru-sama!"

The cheering echoed across the valley.

Shion pinched the bridge of her nose.

Benimaru looked exhausted already.

Gobta groaned.

Rimuru laughed despite himself.

Some things never changed.

And strangely...

That felt reassuring.

For the first time since the convergence crisis began, Tempest's core forces were finally gathered together.

Not just powerful individuals.

A family.

A nation.

A community built by trust.

And they were all standing together beneath the same dangerous sky.

Unfortunately...

The enemy seemed to notice.

The convergence point pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then the command unit moved.

Not forward.

Upward.

It slowly rose into the air.

The echo soldiers immediately repositioned around it.

A formation.

A battle formation.

Diablo's eyes narrowed.

"It's reacting to our numbers."

Souei vanished into shadow.

Reappearing atop a nearby cliff.

"Additional movement detected."

Rimuru looked up.

"Where?"

Souei pointed.

The horizon.

Far beyond the valley.

Far beyond Tempest.

Red lights were appearing.

One after another.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Every convergence point Souei had discovered was responding simultaneously.

The Eryndor commander cursed.

"They're synchronizing."

The words hit everyone like a physical blow.

Because synchronization meant coordination.

And coordination meant planning.

This wasn't random anymore.

It wasn't even a regional threat.

It was becoming something much larger.

The command unit raised one arm.

The convergence point brightened.

The sky itself seemed to darken.

Then—

For the first time—

A voice emerged from the convergence.

Not spoken.

Not heard through ears.

But heard directly inside the mind.

Every person in the valley heard it.

Every soldier.

Every warrior.

Every observer.

One sentence.

Cold.

Ancient.

And impossibly distant.

"Alignment Phase Complete."

The valley fell silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even Veldora looked unsettled.

Then the voice continued.

"Initiating World Convergence."

The sky cracked.

Not in one place.

Not in ten places.

Everywhere.

Across the horizon, crimson fractures appeared simultaneously.

The convergence point above the valley expanded dramatically.

A shockwave erupted outward.

Trees bent.

Stones shattered.

The ground trembled.

And deep within the expanding crimson light...

Something enormous began moving.

Something far larger than the command unit.

Far larger than the guardian they had defeated before.

Far larger than anything that had crossed over yet.

Rimuru stared upward.

His expression became serious.

For the first time since the crisis began...

He felt genuine concern.

Because whatever was coming next...

Wasn't another test.

Wasn't another probe.

And wasn't another observation.

It was the first real move in a war that had finally begun.
