Chapter 59: Guess Where the Milk Came From?

Chapter 59: Guess Where the Milk Came From?
Hilichurls were indeed a species with rather low intelligence. The Boy Who Cried Wolf—humans needed to be fooled three times before they would completely lose trust in their companions, whereas Hilichurls only needed one.
No matter how loudly the Hilichurl standing guard shouted its warning, none of its companions inside responded.
Watching Collei approach with a dagger in hand, the Hilichurl felt utterly helpless.
“Nimesila!”
Seeing that Collei had no intention of letting it go, the Hilichurl mustered up its courage and raised the bone club in its hand. As for what it said... well, surely there was no need to translate that, right?
Short and to the point!
A Hilichurl's combat ability was probably a little above that of an ordinary adult, but Collei was obviously no ordinary person. Even without a Vision, with the methods at her disposal, she could probably take on some Vision holders and come out on top.
So, unsurprisingly, the Hilichurl was thoroughly beaten up by her.
Collei didn't kill it, though. That was because Bai Luo had specifically asked her not to. Apparently, he needed these Hilichurls to do something for him.
After placing the mechanical bird in position, Collei slipped out of the camp without alerting the other Hilichurls. However, before leaving, she didn't forget to give the Hilichurl lying on the ground pretending to be dead another kick.
She held grudges.
By the time she returned to their temporary campsite, Bai Luo had already prepared lunch.
“The fish is from Mondstadt, and the firewood is from Mondstadt too. Authentic Mondstadt grilled fish. Want some?”
Holding up the freshly grilled lunch, Bai Luo was already calling out to her.
Bai Luo's cooking... could only be described as average. It wasn't good enough to make food glow, but it was definitely better than that of a certain shut-in girl.
“Hmph.”
Collei accepted the food he handed her without refusing and began eating with her head lowered.
Over the past two days, she had tried escaping more than once.
But every time she got very far, Bai Luo would somehow catch up and haul her back. Other times, she would trip over those ever-present wires and end up tied up.
It was almost as if that guy was constantly watching her.
After several attempts, she simply gave up.
What else could she do? She couldn't beat him, and she couldn't escape. She could only put up with things for now and look for another opportunity to slip away later.
“This is the last one. After this, we'll pack up and head back.”
Bai Luo paid her no mind and continued stirring the milk in the pot.
Collei had no idea where he had gotten it from. He certainly hadn't been carrying any of this stuff when they left.
“Do we really have to take those stones with us?”
Collei glanced at the stones inside the tent, feeling a little apprehensive.
According to Bai Luo, she was supposed to carry them all the way back to Mondstadt.
The thought of the distance from Dadaupa Gorge to Mondstadt alone was enough to make her despair.
“You'll thank me later.”
Bai Luo glanced at the stones and crystals and chuckled, but he didn't explain any further.
“Like hell I'm going to thank you.”
Although she said that, Collei didn't notice that, little by little, she had already lowered her guard against Bai Luo and was beginning to obey his instructions without question.
After training so many soldiers over the years, Bai Luo had plenty of ways to subtly change someone's attitude toward him.
Did she think his title of “Ausbilder” (Instructor) was for nothing?
Even Tartaglia admired his methods.
The milk in the pot was almost ready. Heating it any longer might affect its texture.
Bai Luo personally ladled out a bowl and handed it to Collei.
At first, Collei only took a small sip. But after savoring it for a moment, her eyes immediately lit up, and she quickly downed the entire bowl.
No matter how enthusiastically she drank, however, Bai Luo had no intention of touching the milk himself.
“Where did you even get this milk? I never saw you carrying any along the way.”
After wiping the milk from the corner of her mouth, Collei finally couldn't suppress her curiosity and asked where the milk had come from.
“Are you sure you want to know?”
Bai Luo spat out the fish bone in his mouth and looked at her with an odd expression.
“...I-I can't?”
Collei instinctively glanced around.
She figured there must be a secret Fatui base somewhere nearby. Otherwise... how could he possibly pull so many things out of nowhere as if performing magic tricks?
Come to think of it, if she learned these secrets, would he quietly kill her to silence her?
“It's not like I can't tell you.”
Bai Luo didn't think it was anything worth hiding, so he explained the origins of everything in full.
“The pot came from the Northern Meaty Tribe Tribe, the milk was scooped out of a big vat belonging to the Southern Sleeper Tribe, and the bowl you're holding came from the Eastern Eclipse Tribe.”
“......”
After hearing Bai Luo's words, Collei suddenly felt that the rich fragrance of milk in her mouth had changed.
She crawled into the nearby bushes using both her hands and feet.
“Uuugh—!”
The so-called Meaty Tribe Tribe, Sleeper Tribe, and Eclipse Tribe were actually three major Hilichurl tribes.
Who knew what those pots had been used to cook?
And the milk, too. There was no guarantee that the stuff had even come from a cow.
Most importantly, she finally understood why Bai Luo had only sprinkled seasoning over her grilled meat and grilled fish these past few days.
There was definitely something wrong with that stuff too.
“Tch. Is that all the endurance you've got?”
Looking at Collei's deathly pale face, Bai Luo revealed his ugly grin.
Although Bai Luo had suffered quite a bit after Ksenia had messed with him back then, experiencing things from the opposite side was actually pretty satisfying.
It really was a rather pleasant experience.
After lunch, under Collei's resentful gaze, Bai Luo packed everything up and set off with her on the road back to Mondstadt.
There actually wasn't much to pack. The temporary campsite had already been there beforehand, probably a resting spot used by hunters.
They hadn't brought many things with them either. The only troublesome part was that pile of ore.
But all those stones were dumped onto Collei.
Originally, Bai Luo had wanted to stay a few more days, since there were still plenty of things Collei hadn't learned yet.
However, the medicine on the bandages around her body was gradually losing its effectiveness, and the Windblume Festival was getting closer and closer. They couldn't afford to delay any longer.
At the very least... they had to make it back to Mondstadt before the Windblume Festival began.
. . .
Before they even reached Mondstadt, the two of them could already feel the festive atmosphere.
Not only were Windblume Festival slogans posted everywhere along the roads, but even the travelers and merchants they occasionally encountered were discussing news related to the festival.
“Once we get back, take these ores to Wagner's smithy.”
Seeing the resistance in her eyes, Bai Luo reached over and ruffled Collei's slightly fluffy hair.
“It's already so late. The smithy should be closed, shouldn't it?”
After spending two days with Bai Luo, Collei had already grown accustomed to being ordered around by him. But that didn't mean she would stop complaining.
Because this was the last bit of her stubbornness.
“If it's closed, knock until they open. If the Fatui need his help, then even if he's in the middle of making babies with his wife, he'll have to pull himself out and come work for us.”
“......”
Bai Luo's words didn't surprise Collei in the slightest. The Fatui had always operated like this.
It was his rather... vivid analogy that made Collei lower her head. She tugged at the bandages covering her face, seemingly trying to hide the faint blush creeping across it.
“I'll wait for you at the city gate. After you deliver the materials, come find me. Once we've changed your bandages, I'll take you to meet someone.”
“Who?”
“A very big and capable big sister.”
“...Huh??”
