Volume 1 Chapter 59: It Still Happened
Trapped In Paradise
Volume 1 Chapter 59: It Still Happened
“Wen Yang! What do we do? What do we do?!”
Ning Chu paced anxiously back and forth across the dormitory balcony, unable to stop talking. “Shaoqing confessed to her before and she rejected him, so how did she suddenly get a boyfriend?! What do we do?!”
Wen Yang didn’t understand why he was so anxious. Leaning against the balcony railing with his arms crossed, he asked in confusion, “Isn’t it normal for unrequited love to go nowhere? It’s probably Shaoqing’s first love, too, so that makes it even more normal, right?”
“Why do you seem even more anxious than he is?”
Ning Chu stopped in his tracks. He opened his mouth, then quickly came up with an excuse. “I’m worried he’ll be upset.”
“Things like this happen sooner or later. Consider it part of growing up.”
“But...” He continued pacing anxiously. A terrible idea suddenly popped into his head. “What if we beat that guy up?! Force him to break up with Ling Ling?”
“I hope it’s not too late.”
Ling Ling dating someone would be one thing, but what if she had already slept with him? Wouldn’t that cause Zhang Shaoqing to immediately turn evil?
Normally, Zhang Shaoqing had a pretty good temperament. Even when Ning Chu had betrayed him the day after he had treated everyone to drinks at the bar, he hadn’t taken it too seriously. But when it came to his family’s excessive control or Ling Ling, his face would turn dark as if he could erupt and start beating someone at any moment.
“How can we just beat someone up for no reason?” Wen Yang said helplessly. “That won’t solve anything. You might as well tell Shaoqing directly and let him handle it himself.”
Let Zhang Shaoqing handle it himself?
Ning Chu remembered the first major scene involving Zhang Shaoqing in the novel: using his status as her friend to drug the defenseless Ling Ling and take advantage of her.
Absolutely not!
If this dumb rich kid really became the kind of criminal who deserved to be executed...
Strangely enough, his first thought wasn’t about his own safety within the plot. Instead, he felt sorry at the thought of Zhang Shaoqing turning evil.
“Ning Chu! Wen Yang! Want some milk tea? We can make up the minimum order together!” The balcony door opened. Zhang Shaoqing took off his headphones and poked his head outside. “What are you two chatting about so happily on the balcony? Come play a three-man squad!”
“......”
“How much coffee did you drink this morning? And you still want milk tea in the afternoon?” Wen Yang walked back into the room. “Aren’t you afraid of getting fat like a pig?”
“Who gives a damn? I’ve got six-pack abs!”
Ning Chu hurried after Wen Yang and quietly reminded him, “Don’t tell him yet.”
“Got it.”
The air conditioner was set to twenty-six degrees Celsius, yet the room was still slightly stuffy.
Back at his computer, Ning Chu was simultaneously worrying about Zhang Shaoqing turning evil and poking his head around looking for the air-conditioner remote.
He spotted the remote on Zhang Shaoqing’s desk and called out, “Shaoqing, turn the AC down!”
“Twenty-six is the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly setting. Why lower it?”
For all his extravagant spending when treating others, this rich kid always seemed to save money in the strangest places.
Hunting for discounts, saving on electricity bills... After an entire month, the money he saved wouldn’t even be enough to cover one of his decent meals.
Thinking about how Zhang Shaoqing’s childhood sweetheart had been swept off her feet by someone else, Ning Chu didn’t feel like arguing with him. He sighed sympathetically, turned on his computer, and logged into the game.
“I’m online. Invite me!”
“Today I’m definitely carrying you to a win! I refuse to believe I can’t grant you victory! Wen Yang! Hurry up!”
Ning Chu wasn’t particularly interested in gaming, but since it was the holiday, there wasn’t much else to do if they weren’t going out to work part-time.
Every so often, he glanced toward Zhang Shaoqing, his eyes full of concern, while wondering whether he should reveal what had happened with Ling Ling.
Either Zhang Shaoqing would turn evil on the spot, or he would behave like a normal person and spend some time feeling heartbroken and depressed.
Based on what Ning Chu had learned about Zhang Shaoqing during this period, the former seemed considerably more likely.
Ning Chu remained silent even while playing. The dormitory was filled with Zhang Shaoqing’s sweet talk, while Wen Yang occasionally chimed in with a few curses. The atmosphere among the three friends playing together was rather strange.
After two more games, Zhang Shaoqing looked at Ning Chu’s painfully bad stats and let out a long sigh.
“You’re seriously terrible at this.”
“You know I hardly ever played games before...”
“Then are you mute when you play? You barely say anything, and you keep zoning out.”
Wen Yang tried to make excuses for Ning Chu. “He’s unfamiliar with the maps and heroes. Don’t set the bar so high when you’re playing with a beginner.”
“Tch!” Zhang Shaoqing grumbled a few more complaints before starting another game himself.
Ning Chu thought it over for a long time and ultimately decided to keep the truth from Zhang Shaoqing. Rubbing his temples in frustration, he climbed into bed for an afternoon nap.
The accumulated exhaustion from the past few days of part-time work, combined with the constant worries weighing on his mind, had already left him physically and mentally drained. The moment he lay down, his thoughts began to grow hazy.
He had been running around pointlessly for several days. Although he hadn’t made any money, at least he had noticed that Wen Yang was becoming increasingly adept at turning down women.
With a little more time and guidance, perhaps even if Wen Yang eventually left his side, he still wouldn’t fall into the “trap” laid out by the plot.
“Fuck!”
A sudden curse from below startled Ning Chu, who was already half-asleep.
Still somewhat irritated, he rolled over and poked his head over the edge of the bed. What he saw immediately wiped away both his irritation and his drowsiness.
Zhang Shaoqing’s face was as dark as charcoal, his teeth clenched, his expression twisted with rage.
“What happened?” Ning Chu asked anxiously.
“None of your business!”
The violent tone made Ning Chu shrink his neck apprehensively. It wasn’t that he was naturally timid; with both his height and physical strength at a disadvantage, being a little more cautious was simply the smarter choice.
Could it be that Zhang Shaoqing had found out about Ling Ling getting a boyfriend? But who had told him?
Wen Yang turned around and frowned at Zhang Shaoqing.
“If something’s wrong, just say it. Why are you taking it out on Ning Chu?”
“......”
“If you don’t want to talk, then stop throwing a tantrum in the dorm.”
His tone was firm. Ning Chu could only peek over the edge of the bed and repeatedly signal to him with his eyes.
Don’t provoke Zhang Shaoqing any more!
After a moment, Zhang Shaoqing finally turned around. His face was still dark, but the twisted fury that had made his facial muscles twitch was gone.
He handed his phone to Ning Chu.
“See for yourself.”
Ning Chu looked down at the screen, and the corner of his mouth twitched.
Holy shit. Ling Ling had posted a couple photos on her own social media to show off her relationship!
In the photo, Ling Ling was nestled in a man’s arms, crossing her thumb and index finger into a simple heart gesture. The man was looking down at her with an affectionate gaze.
There was a small cake on the table, and behind the two of them was a double bed covered with pristine white sheets. It looked like a hotel room.
No wonder Zhang Shaoqing had suddenly developed a severe case of high blood pressure.
Ning Chu sighed and tried to comfort him.
“It’s fine. If you miss out on one person, there’ll always be someone better...”
Wen Yang hadn’t seen the photo, but after hearing Ning Chu’s attempt at consolation, he understood the general situation. His previously stern tone immediately softened.
“Should I go buy a case of beer from outside the school? We can have a few drinks together tonight.”
Ning Chu’s little head bobbed up and down repeatedly.
“Yeah, yeah. Let Wen Yang have a drink with you. Once you’ve had some alcohol, everything will pass.”
The only concern was that after a few drinks, Zhang Shaoqing might completely lose control...
They’d better lock the door when they drank.
Zhang Shaoqing took his phone back. He didn’t respond to either of them. Standing there, he frowned, apparently lost in thought.
“I’m going to look for her at the hotels nearby.”
“Hey! Don’t!”
Ning Chu hurriedly tried to get out of bed, but Zhang Shaoqing had already left the dormitory.
All Ning Chu could do was complain to Wen Yang.
“Why didn’t you stop him?!”
“Well... it should be fine, right?”
“What if Shaoqing finds them and catches them in bed together?”
Only then did Wen Yang realize how serious the situation could be. He suddenly stood up.
“I’ll go after him!”
