V3: Chapter 70: The Invisible Tentacles
Yes....
There are no trees by the sea.
Octaville suddenly snapped back to reality.
Just one glance was enough to make her hair stand on end.
"Watch out!"
Octaville grabbed Hilary's waist, spun her around, and pulled her into her arms, raising her right hand towards the door.
Boom!!!
A flash of magical light appeared, something bright flew out, followed by the sound of flesh exploding. Some sticky liquid sprayed onto Hilary and Octaville, smelling extremely foul, like rotting flesh left out for days.
"What happened?"
Hilary was still a little dazed. Turning around, she saw that the fog outside had dissipated somewhat, revealing a pool of liquid at the doorway. It looked black, with some green and purple parts nearby. Even without the foul smell, it looked utterly repulsive.
“There was nothing there just now…”
A chill ran down Hilary’s spine.
She had been standing at the doorway for so long, but she hadn’t seen anything, only a thick fog.
Logically, the monster seemed quite close by; even in such thick fog, at that distance, she should have been able to see some outline. But she saw nothing, not even the slightest shape.
“I didn’t see anything either, but after I came out of the illusion, I suddenly saw this thing.”
Octaville couldn’t describe the monster’s appearance. It seemed like something, yet it didn’t seem like anything; it could only be called a monster. This indescribable thing was truly impossible to describe.
Hilary wanted to go out and see the mass of flesh, but the fog outside hadn’t completely dissipated. If she went out now, and another monster like this appeared, even if it was right in front of her, she wouldn’t recognize it—it would just be a pointless suicide mission.
“What do we do? Fu, we can't stay here forever. We still need to take Laura to the beach and find the point where the sea meets the ocean.”
Hilary frowned, looking worried.
“Look at this thick fog outside, it's completely blocking us from getting out, and there are… monsters we can't even see.”
“Even if there are monsters, we have to get out.”
Octaville's tone was firm. She turned and glanced at the second floor.
“Haven't you noticed? All of us in the Magic Tower die inside the Magic Tower, not outside. That means even if we stay inside, we're not necessarily safe. It's better to go out and face the monsters directly. If we see them, we can just kill them.”
Octaville looked at the thick fog again.
“I refuse to believe that you wouldn’t feel anything if the monster were really close. There must be something there, especially after dealing with tentacles for so many years. We can’t just sit here and wait to die. We’re going to die anyway, so we might as well go out and try to find a way to survive.”
Octaville was right, and Hilary nodded in agreement.
Just then, a scream suddenly came from upstairs.
Octaville and Hilary immediately became alert. They exchanged a glance, their faces a hundred times paler than before.
“Laura!!!”
Laura was their lifeline now, as important as their daughter. If anything happened to Laura, all their years of effort would be wasted. They had finally found a breakthrough, and it was gone.
“Laura!!! Are you alright? Where are you?!”
Octaville ran frantically, taking three steps at a time, rushing upstairs as fast as she could.
Hilary followed closely behind, running as fast as she could, telling Octaville exactly where Laura had collapsed.
The two of them raced to the door in less than ten seconds.
The door, which had been wide open, was now ajar.
Octaville and Hilary's expressions grew even more serious.
Bang!
Octaville forcefully pushed the door open.
The next second, she and Hilary abruptly closed their eyes.
The room was incredibly bright, as if the sun were right in front of them, as bright as the rising sun, so bright it hurt their eyes and made them want to cry.
Then, the light gradually faded.
Octaville, enduring the pain, opened her eyes first, only to see Laura sitting on the floor, hugging her legs and trembling.
Unlike before, where Laura used to hug her legs with her arms, this time she hugged them with her wings. Those wings, filled with countless eyes, had finally reappeared.
“Laura, what just happened?”
Octaville hurried over, crouching down to carefully examine Laura.
Hilary also ran over.
“Laura, are you hurt anywhere? Did you see anything?”
She asked incessantly.
Laura seemed stunned, just staring at her toes with her head down, not saying a word, her lips pursed, like a mute.
“She’s probably just scared. Let her calm down for a while.”
Octaville sighed, pulling Hilary to sit beside Laura, silently keeping her company.
On the other side.
“Grandma.”
Liang Lin approached the old woman telling stories.
"Where did you hear this story?"
I'd never heard it before. Although it sounded far-fetched, after all I'd experienced, it seemed perfectly reasonable.
The old woman was taken aback, completely surprised that an adult would listen to her story.
"This story... this story, many of us who live by the sea know it, haha."
The old woman chuckled, lowering her voice to Liang Lin's ear.
"It's just a story to scare children. If a child misbehaves, you tell them to throw them onto the beach and let those monsters eat them."
Ah...
So it was just a story made up to scare children.
Liang Lin was slightly disappointed.
She had thought there would be some unexpected insight.
"However, in this story, there are even words like 'unspeakable things,' 'monsters,' and 'tentacles.'"
Liang Di interjected at this moment, her expression not very friendly, looking at the old woman with slight suspicion. Then, she looked at Liang Lin.
"Sister Liang Lin, don't you find it strange? This is too much of a coincidence."
